Jr. Ophthalmic Photographer

About the Role

The Jr. Ophthalmic Photographer operates under the general supervision of the Clinical Manager, guided by the policies and procedures of UCSF Medical Center, Ambulatory Services, and the Department of Ophthalmology. This role is responsible for the efficient organization and operation of all technical functions within the eye photography practice. Assignments vary daily, requiring flexibility and comprehensive training. Primary responsibilities include ophthalmic photography, scans, testing, and precise documentation of patient visits and care.

The incumbent performs complex, intricate, and technically challenging photography, such as Retinal Angiography and other ophthalmic testing as ordered by department providers. Additionally, the role may involve assisting as a clinical technician with patient care work-ups and preliminary testing to prepare patients for provider examinations.

Responsibilities

• Perform ophthalmic photography, scans, and testing.
• Document patient visits and care accurately.
• Conduct complex and technically challenging photography, including Retinal Angiography.
• Assist as a clinical technician with patient care work-ups and preliminary testing.
• Maintain and clean ophthalmic instrumentation.
• Provide minor surgical assistance and surgical set-up.
• Instruct and educate patients on procedures and care.
• Direct and care for blind or partially sighted patients.
• Respond to patient emergencies in the clinic.
• Work toward The Joint Commission (TJC) compliance under the direction of the Manager.

Requirements

• Certified Ophthalmology Assistant (COA®) or above.
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in clinical ophthalmology or optometry.
• AHA CPR/BLS certification (including patient assessment and vital signs).
• Advanced knowledge of ocular anatomy, physiology, and terminology.
• Understanding of how anatomic systems and systemic disorders may affect the visual system.
• Demonstrated experience in patient instruction and education.
• Experience caring for and directing blind or partially sighted patients.
• Experience in ophthalmic instrumentation cleaning and maintenance.
• Experience in minor surgical assisting and surgical set-up.
• Ability to work with intermittent standing and sitting for 8-9 hours per day.
• Strong communication, organization skills, professionalism, and motivation.

Preferred Qualifications

• OCT-C certification.
• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution.
• Experience with a high-volume ophthalmic practice, Retinal, or University Ophthalmic practice.

Pay

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Placement within the salary range depends on factors such as work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
