What You’ll Do
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical defects on transit buses
- Perform preventive maintenance, including tune-ups, brake service, and fluid checks
- Service pneumatic, hydraulic, HVAC, cooling, steering, suspension, and fuel systems
- Diagnose and repair electrical systems, alternators, wiring, and computer-controlled components
- Use specialized tools, lifts, and diagnostic equipment safely
- Perform brake relines and road tests to verify repair quality
- Maintain accurate service records and a clean, safe work environment
- Support and mentor apprentices or entry-level mechanics
What We’re Looking For
- A high school diploma or GED
- Three years of heavy equipment or automotive maintenance experience (OCTA Apprentice Mechanic program may substitute for experience)
- Experience with CNG and battery-electric vehicles is highly desirable
- Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex systems on modern transit buses
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, follow instructions, and use diagnostic software
- Ability to work various shifts and locations
- Safe, reliable work practices and willingness to learn new technology
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Class B CA Driver License with passenger endorsement
Pay and Benefits
- The starting pay rate for this position is $33.87 an hour.
- Pay rate increases incrementally according to the union contract.
- Current top wage is $43.50 after 36 months.
- Earn a shift differential of 3% or 5% of your base pay, respectively, for working swing and graveyard shifts.
- Additional pay of $3 more per hour can be earned for completing and maintaining the H Series and L2 ASE certifications, with the potential to earn an extra $1 per hour for bidding into a Master Transit Bus Technician slot for a total of up to an extra $4 an hour on top of the base pay.
