Responsibilities
- Provide materials engineering support for production processes including electroplating, surface finishing, cleaning, depainting, and painting operations
- Investigate material and process non-conformances, perform root cause analysis, and develop corrective and preventive actions
- Conduct failure analysis and material evaluations using laboratory equipment such as thickness gauges, optical and scanning microscopes, conductivity meters, and hardness testers
- Prepare formal engineering reports documenting laboratory findings, technical analyses, and recommendations for process improvements
- Review, update, and support development of material protection process specifications and technical documentation
- Support research, development, testing, and evaluation (RDT&E) efforts through Design of Experiments (DOE), test plan development, and material characterization testing
- Analyze test results to assess material performance and recommend material selection, optimization, or process improvements
- Collaborate with government stakeholders, program managers, and production personnel to communicate technical findings and resolve engineering issues
- Contribute to project execution within the Materials Protection Team while ensuring compliance with contractual, regulatory, and technical standards
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in material science, materials engineering, chemical engineering, or related scientific/technical discipline from an ABET accredited college or university
- At least 3 years of experience in materials engineering
- Demonstrated experience working in a hands-on laboratory or manufacturing process support role
- Practical knowledge of one or more of the following material process areas: electroplating, inorganic/organic coatings, chemical cleaning/stripping, corrosion control, and wear-resistant technologies
- Experience with materials characterization and analytical techniques (e.g., microscopy, spectroscopy, mechanical testing, or electrochemical testing)
- Proven ability to troubleshoot technical problems, perform root cause analysis, and implement effective solutions
- Strong technical writing skills with experience generating formal engineering reports, test plans, and technical procedures
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in aerospace, defense, or MRO industrial environment
- Knowledge of DoD/Navy-specific material and process specifications
- Hands-on experience with test methods such as ASTM B117 (Salt Spray), ASTM G85 (Modified Salt Spray), and others related to coating and material performance
- Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) principles and statistical analysis
