Journeyman Lineman

Primary location: Cleveland, Mississippi

Travel percentage: Up to 25%

About the role

Construct, build, and maintain overhead and underground electric facilities with primary voltages ranging up to 34.5KV. This includes installation, removal, and maintenance of overhead/underground primary line facilities and secondary services, transformers, regulators, capacitors, and reclosers. Operate various equipment such as aerial bucket and digger derrick trucks, and drive different sizes and types of trucks.

Responsibilities

• Install, remove, and maintain overhead/underground primary line facilities and secondary services.
• Install overhead/underground transformers and wire all types of transformer banks.
• Install and wire regulators, capacitors, and reclosers.
• Read and understand job prints and sketches; recognize materials and their function.
• Set and climb all sizes of poles in open areas, rear alleys, and energized lines.
• Be available for on-call duty and emergency response.
• Assume a lead role and direct the work of other linemen.
• Plan and lay out all work in a safe and efficient manner.
• Recognize and mitigate workplace hazards.
• Maintain and care for company equipment and safeguard assets.
• Interact with the public in a pleasant and tactful manner, delivering high-level customer service.
• Identify opportunities for process improvement.
• Perform basic computer tasks, such as entering time worked, checking emails, and completing computer-based training.
• Communicate effectively and work as part of a team.

Requirements

• 5 years of lineman experience.
• Class A Commercial Driver’s License (or ability to obtain one).
• Ability to use physical strength to perform tasks in all weather conditions.
• Ability to work irregular hours and out-of-town assignments as required.
• Good communication skills and ability to take and understand directives.
• Ability to work with limited supervision.
• Ability to climb and work off poles of various heights.
• Ability to recognize and mitigate workplace hazards.
• Ability to meet the public in a pleasant and tactful manner.
• Demonstrated acceptance of a diverse and inclusive work environment and customer base.

Essential Functions

• Traverse uneven terrain (wet, muddy, slippery, concrete, or asphalt) with a full complement of tools weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Work in extreme weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
• Work in confined spaces and alone during restoration services.
• Perform physical tasks including digging, pulling, pushing, carrying, and lifting up to 80 pounds.
• Maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
• Safely operate trucks and heavy equipment around energized lines and equipment.
• Work at heights for extended periods, including overhead work from a bucket truck.
• Climb up and descend from wooden/steel structures, poles, and ladders; balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, grip, handle, and feel.
• Perform emergency rescue operations, including bringing an unconscious or injured co-worker down from significant height.
• Exercise sound judgment to work safely in an inherently dangerous environment.
• Understand and follow safety rules.
• Work up to 16 continuous hours per day.
• Wear required personal protection equipment.
• Manage stress and handle tense situations.
• Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
• Work overtime when necessary.
