About the role
Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) is looking for a Journeyman Electrician who is responsible for installing, maintaining, inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, and supporting commercial electrical systems throughout FHCSD facilities. Ensures the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of power distribution, lighting, emergency power, UPS, solar photovoltaic (PV), and related electrical infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, inspect, troubleshoot, and repair commercial electrical systems and equipment.
- Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on electrical infrastructure.
- Diagnose and repair electrical distribution systems, switchgear, transformers, panels, motor controls, lighting systems, feeders, and associated equipment.
- Install conduit, wiring, panels, disconnects, and electrical devices in accordance with applicable codes.
- Maintain commercial power distribution systems to maximize reliability and operational efficiency.
- Read and interpret electrical blueprints, one-line diagrams, wiring schematics, and technical specifications.
- Inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot UPS systems, battery backup systems, and emergency power infrastructure supporting healthcare operations.
- Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, inverters, disconnects, combiner panels, and monitoring equipment.
- Utilize electrical testing equipment to diagnose system failures and perform root cause analysis.
- Lead the development of standardized electrical training materials, competency assessments, and continuing education programs for Facilities staff.
- Mentor technicians in electrical theory, building systems, troubleshooting, and regulatory compliance to strengthen organizational capabilities and support career advancement.
- Respond to routine service requests and after-hours emergency calls as required.
- Recommend and implement electrical system improvements that enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with National Electrical Code (NEC), OSHA regulations, lockout/tagout procedures, and applicable local codes.
- Maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, and work order documentation utilizing the maintenance management system.
- Support construction, renovation, infrastructure improvement projects, and coordinate work with contractors and vendors.
- Assist with project planning, estimating, material procurement, and other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Completion of a recognized electrical apprenticeship program required.
- California General Electrician Certification (Journeyman) required.
- Minimum five (5) years of journeyman-level commercial electrical experience required.
- Must successfully be enrolled in the DMV pull program and meet organizational driving requirements prior to start date.
- Traveling between sites and other locations is required as an essential function of the job. Must have a car, a valid California driver's license, and proof of minimum levels of car insurance as required under California law, although limits of $100,000 are recommended. An acceptable driving record is also required. California law requires all drivers to obtain a valid California driver's license within ten days of establishing residency. Mileage and other reimbursement governed by policy.
Preferred qualifications
- OSHA 10/30, NFPA 70E, NABCEP Solar, and UPS manufacturer certifications preferred.
- Experience maintaining commercial, healthcare, industrial, educational, or institutional facilities preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot electrical distribution systems, motor controls, lighting systems, emergency power, UPS systems, and solar PV systems.
- Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and electrical safety standards.
- Ability to safely operate electrical testing equipment, power tools, ladders, and lifts.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple assignments, and provide technical support to Facilities staff.
