Working in the Refinery Maintenance Department, the successful employee will troubleshoot and maintain electrical and automation systems as well as install, test, and commission new electrical installations and associated equipment. May supervise and train other craftsmen and work on various jobs without direct supervision. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Prefer Journeyman Electrical Technician certification or related field experience
  • Fluent in English, both oral and written
  • 5 or more years of direct experience working in a maintenance role in an industrial plant, refinery, and/or chemical industry
  • Ability to adjust schedule to meet business demands
  • Working knowledge of Electrical Safe Work Practices (NFPA 70E)
  • Experience with electrical distribution switchgear, protective relay systems maintenance, and testing
  • Ability to work independently, using manuals and other information to troubleshoot and improve understanding of equipment
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, including documenting inspection and repair information
  • Ability to identify, evaluate, and solve problems, including considering alternative solutions and conclusions
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment needed for job tasks
  • Ability to concentrate on tasks for extended periods without distraction
  • Ability to choose appropriate actions considering relative costs and benefits
  • Ability to stay productive with or without assigned tasks
  • Familiarity with P&IDs, loop drawings, controllers, and digital signals preferred
  • Working experience with 3-phase medium voltage up to 12,470 Volts
  • Eligible to work in the United States (Company will not sponsor immigration or work visas)

Responsibilities

  • Communicate all safety concerns and incidents to supervisor immediately
  • Report work status, findings, and improvement opportunities to supervision
  • Obtain appropriate work permits and perform a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) prior to starting work
  • Understand the refinery’s electrical infrastructure and general electrical principles
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electrical equipment, including:
    • Electric motors
    • Protective relays
    • Starter controls
    • VFDs
    • Wiring systems
    • Overhead lines
    • Heat tracing systems
    • Uninterruptable power supplies
    • Batteries
    • Generators
    • Lighting fixtures
    • Cord sets
    • Grounding systems
  • Configure, install, and commission new electrical equipment
  • Research and retrieve equipment information using the internet, plant equipment files, and vendor communication
  • Read and interpret loop drawings, P&IDs, wiring schematics, and single-line diagrams
  • Use computers and software applications to enter and retrieve data
  • Determine appropriate tools and PPE based on arc flash potential and electrical safety considerations
  • Operate mobile equipment, including aerial lifts, scissor lifts, bucket trucks, and forklifts
  • Use test equipment, including multimeters, insulation testers (meggers), battery testers, and signal generators
  • Perform physical work activities, including pulling, lifting, twisting, working in confined spaces, and on elevated platforms requiring fall protection
  • Maintain proper housekeeping of work areas, vehicles, and tools
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by management within the scope of training
