Responsibilities

  • Performs all four stages of HVAC installations in new construction: marking-out and measurement, piping/drain-line installation, duct-work preparation, setting units, wiring, finish, and start-up.
  • Applies journeyman-level technical skills and knowledge of current industry codes, regulations, and standards to ensure complete, quality installations that meet inspection code.
  • Reviews blueprints and marks out locations for HVAC systems, including air returns, chimneys, and bath fans.
  • Interfaces with builders, contractors, homeowners, architects, building inspectors, and project managers to identify installation needs and adapt to changes.
  • Measures and determines duct sizing for proper airflow; ensures correct amounts of duct and fittings are requested.
  • Cuts ductwork and prepares job sites according to requirements.
  • Installs copper piping and drain lines below slab level, chimneys, and flashing on roofs, ensuring water-tight seals.
  • Cuts holes for HVAC installation using saws as needed.
  • Installs exhausts for baths, return air systems, hood vents, and zone damper systems.
  • Assembles HVAC units, condensers, air boxes, registers, thermostats, coils, air handlers, heat pumps, copper line sets, and risers.
  • Lays out and installs ductwork, flex systems, and equipment according to job requirements; wraps duct with insulation and seals as needed.
  • Modifies existing spaces to accommodate new equipment or builds unit platforms to support weight.
  • Installs refrigerant lines, fans, appliance vents, smoke detectors, humidifiers, and grills.
  • Brazes freon lines, pressurizes with nitrogen, evacuates freon from units, and tests equipment for proper operation.
  • Connects copper tubing between indoor and outdoor units using high-temperature soldering.
  • Sets and tests drain pans and drain lines to meet drop flow rates.
  • Wires main power lines, ensuring secure high and low voltages.
  • Performs start-up of HVAC systems, testing heat and cool cycles, and records data such as model/serial numbers, amperage, and pressures.
  • Ensures installations meet technical/safety standards and regulatory codes; makes modifications for proper installation and air balance.
  • Provides on-the-job training and support to assigned Apprentice Helpers.

Requirements

  • City of Omaha Journeyman license; experience leading a crew strongly preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of basic carpentry, gas piping, electricity, and airflow.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Working knowledge of local codes and general industry standards.
