About the role

This position is responsible for performing line construction and maintenance work, installing, maintaining, and repairing overhead and underground lines and distribution equipment, setting new poles, stringing conductors, making splices and taps, and performing primary, secondary, overhead, and underground line and cable work.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to customer calls and provide customer service.
  • Install, maintain, and repair overhead and underground lines and distribution equipment.
  • Set new poles, string conductors, and make splices and taps.
  • Perform primary, secondary, overhead, and underground line and cable work.
  • Locate, diagnose, and repair electrical distribution problems.
  • Upgrade primary conductors and convert primary circuits to higher voltages.
  • Install, repair, and maintain streetlights.
  • Climb wood and steel poles and other elevated structures.
  • Operate bucket and digger trucks, trenching machines, trackhoe, forklift, and other heavy equipment.
  • Operate substations.
  • Clean and maintain trucks and equipment.
  • Work in confined spaces.
  • Communicate with the public; explain power outages and other electrical problems; respond to complaints of power problems; assume duties in absence of the Supervisor.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Must meet state requirements for a Journeyman.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio vehicle operator’s license and remain insurable under the City’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Ohio Commercial Class A with air brakes driver’s license.
  • First Aid and CPR Training certification.

Qualifications

  • Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to the minimum qualifications stated above.

Skills

  • Knowledge of electrical codes, electrical installation, maintenance, and repair, electrical principles, agency goals and objectives, agency policies and procedures, practices, methods, and tools, and equipment used in the installation, extension, and repair of electric lines.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion, understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, or regulations to specific situations, carry out and interpret instructions, recognize safety warnings, understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications, perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time in often adverse conditions, travel to and gain access to work site, demonstrate professionalism, apply management principles to solve agency problems, locate, diagnose, and repair defects in electrical distribution system, climb poles and to perform maintenance on high voltage lines, train subordinate linemen and seasonal workers, meet physical demands of the job including pole climbing, understand and execute oral and written instructions and to interpret electrical diagrams and plans, operate tools and heavy equipment used in electrical distribution installation, maintenance, and repair operations, communicate effectively with other employees, contractors, other agencies, and the public, establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, use computers and various software programs.
