About the role

AGIAMONDO e.V. is the personnel service of German Catholics for development cooperation. Within the Civil Peace Service (ZFD), we offer specialists the opportunity for meaningful service in collaboration with local development actors. The ZFD is a program for violence prevention and peacebuilding in crisis and conflict regions worldwide. In South Sudan, the ZFD has been supporting civil society organizations for many years in developing non-violent conflict resolution, strengthening human rights, and accompanying traumatized communities. The work in the ZFD is based on partnership, trust, and long-term commitment. Specialists contribute their expertise, learn from local experiences, and help strengthen structures for peaceful coexistence.

The Catholic Radio Network is a church media network based in Juba, affiliated with the Bishops' Conference for Sudan and South Sudan. The associated community radios broadcast in numerous local languages, reaching people in rural areas who often have no access to other sources of information. The network advocates for independent journalism, transparent reporting, and the promotion of dialogue and peace, viewing media work as a key contribution to social development.

Your workplace is Juba, the capital of South Sudan. From there, you will undertake regular trips to partner radio stations across the country. The security situation is tense and can change dynamically; travel is situation-dependent and closely coordinated with local partners. Juba offers basic infrastructure, secure housing, shopping facilities, and medical care through private institutions. The climate is tropical with distinct rainy and dry seasons. This location is not suitable for families with children.

Responsibilities

• Analyze, together with radio editorial teams, the existing needs in journalistic work and editorial processes.
• Develop practical formats to strengthen peace- and conflict-sensitive reporting.
• Accompany journalists and editorial teams in their daily work and promote their professional development.
• Support radios in developing and applying editorial standards and balanced reporting.
• Strengthen collaboration within the radio network and promote exchange between individual stations.
• Build contacts with national and international partner organizations in the media and peace sectors.
• Support radios in developing content on peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and trauma understanding.
• Contribute to the organizational development of the network and accompany relevant processes.
• Ensure the proper expenditure and management of financial resources on-site in accordance with donor guidelines and AGIAMONDO’s requirements, working in partnership with colleagues from the partner organization.

Requirements

• University degree in journalism, media, communication sciences, or a comparable field.
• Several years of practical experience in journalism or media work, ideally in an international or development-related context.
• Experience working in conflict-affected or sensitive contexts and a good understanding of peace and conflict dynamics.
• Structured, independent, and cooperative way of working with diverse partners.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to convey content clearly and in a target-group-oriented manner.
• Intercultural competence and the ability to work respectfully and sensitively in a diverse environment.
• Ideally, initial experience in South Sudan or comparable contexts.
• Possession of a driver’s license and very good English skills; additional language skills are an advantage.
• EU citizenship or Swiss nationality and identification with the goals and concerns of church-based development and peace work.
