About the Grant
The Neal Peirce Foundation is accepting applications for its Journalism Travel Grants. The grants support journalists covering under‑told stories about ways to make cities and their metro regions work better for all their people. Grants of up to $1,500 enable travel within the United States to produce one or more stories for publication. Awards are selected through a competitive review process and cover travel expenses necessary for on‑the‑ground reporting.
Eligibility
- Full‑time freelancers and journalists currently employed by a news organization.
- Reporters, writers, editors, and photographers working in print, online, radio, television, podcasts, or multimedia.
- Must have had stories published or aired in the previous three years.
- Early‑career journalists and individuals from backgrounds underrepresented in today’s news media are especially encouraged to apply.
- Full eligibility requirements are detailed at the foundation’s application page.
Travel & Timeline
- Travel must occur within the United States and can be local or long‑distance, using any reasonable mode of transport (bus, rail, air, auto, etc.).
- Travel is expected to take place within three months of award receipt.
- The resulting story must be submitted within three months of the travel’s completion.
Promotion Requirements
- Stories must briefly acknowledge the Neal Peirce Foundation’s support at the end.
- Grant recipients are expected to promote the story on their social‑media accounts.
- Recipients may be asked to participate in foundation efforts to publicize the grant program.
