JOB SUMMARY:

About the Role

The Clinical Veterinarian provides veterinary support to the Division of Veterinary Resources laboratory animal programs, primarily delivering medical and surgical care for non-human primates (NHP) and rodents. The role also includes participation in veterinary care for other animal species and involvement in emergency and after-hours coverage.

Responsibilities

• Oversee all aspects of research animal colony health, including health surveillance and medical management of NHPs and rodents.
• Provide diagnostic support and treatment for sick or injured animals.
• Assist in developing and implementing research protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Provide technical oversight of NHP and rodent animal care technician personnel to ensure SOP training, safety, and facility regulatory compliance.
• Train and instruct animal care technicians, DVR investigators, and research staff on techniques associated with research NHP and rodent use.
• Act as a coordinator for animal care projects, directing project management meetings to ensure protocol requirements are met.
• Ensure all animal care areas maintain a well-documented and consistently implemented training process for all work groups.
• Assist during experiment start-up meetings between contract personnel and DVR Principal Investigators (PIs), Study Directors, and other investigator team members to improve communication and customer service.
• Interact effectively with PIs, Study Directors, and investigator teams to achieve goals within approved research protocols, including developing schedules, diet, dosing, and reporting procedures.
• Familiarize yourself with active experimental protocols and future studies to ensure experimental parameters are met.
• Participate in emergency call schedules, after-hours veterinary care, ICU night, weekend, and holiday coverage as required.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent.
• License to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state.
• Minimum of three years’ experience in clinical laboratory animal medicine, including non-human primates (NHPs).
• Completion of a residency program in laboratory animal medicine and certification as a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) is preferred.
• Experience with IACUC activities, research protocol review/approval process, or consultant service to the IACUC.
• Knowledge of laboratory animal technician duties and training.
• Excellent knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations governing animal care.
• Legal residency in the United States.

• Demonstrated work experience within an animal care facility or in the field of laboratory animal science.
• Proven ability to develop, implement, and maintain training programs.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks in an organized manner with minimal supervision.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.).
