Jet Operator - Direct

Under the direction of the Dyehouse Department, Jet Operators are responsible for operating and monitoring dyeing machinery to ensure efficient and high-quality fabric processing.

Responsibilities

  • Load machines and calibrate jets according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP); record settings.
  • Load fabric into machines, sew fabric end-to-end, close hatches, and start machines.
  • Patrol machines to observe proper operation and address any issues.
  • Unload machines by opening hatches, pulling out/cutting seams, cutting swatches, marking swatches and fabric, drying swatches, and dispatching them to the dyeing office.
  • Record data on manufacturing orders (m.o) and Statistical Process Control (SPC) forms; enter data into Work-In-Progress (WIP) systems; deliver m.o to the next process.
  • Prepare and handle shade checks as required, including reloading fabric and restarting machines.
  • Reverse fabric using dye machines or sky reels to transfer dyed fabric between tubs.
  • Follow all safety standards and ensure team compliance with safety protocols.
  • Communicate job expectations, monitor and appraise job results, and provide coaching or discipline as needed.
  • Drive continuous improvement by eliminating waste in safety, quality, cost (raw materials, labor, energy), and machine efficiency (downtime analysis).
  • Maintain workflow by monitoring process steps, setting variables, observing control points, and implementing cost reductions.
  • Complete production plans on time by scheduling personnel, establishing priorities, and resolving issues.
  • Collaborate with the Launch/Product Engineering team to ensure new products meet internal and external customer requirements.
  • Control product changes through engineering change processes or deviations.
  • Maintain quality by enforcing organizational standards and stopping processing if material quality is substandard.
  • Teach and enforce Stop-Call-Wait protocols.
  • Ensure equipment operation by requesting repairs and evaluating new equipment or techniques.
  • Compile, analyze, and report production performance data.
  • Create and revise systems and procedures by analyzing operating practices and implementing changes.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment by educating personnel on control points, equipment, and compliance (Safety, Quality, and 5S).
  • Engage with Safety & IATF Coordinators to meet safety program requirements (risk assessments, audits, LPAs).
  • Conduct effective accident/incident investigations.
  • Manage production personnel, including selection, training, and mentoring.
  • Communicate updates to supporting teams (QC, Mechanical Support, Purchasing).
  • Drive and promote Kaizens and support Six Sigma/Lean initiatives.
  • Understand and adhere to dyeing specifications and product boundaries.
  • Maintain accurate and legible audit data; complete forms according to procedures.
  • Segregate non-conforming products and report deviations to Senior Quality/Process Engineers or Department Managers.
  • Organize and direct strike-offs and manage Carton Requisitions (Carton Req(s)).
  • Follow work instructions and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; six months to one year of position-related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Skilled knowledge or direct experience in dyeing and/or finishing processes is a plus.
  • Understanding of textile manufacturing methods and defect identification.
  • Problem-solving skills with in-depth knowledge of 8D and Practical Problem Solving (PPS).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and basic computer skills.
  • Understanding of Lean improvement methods: Standardized work, 5S, SMED, 7 forms of waste, visual management, and Andon.
  • Familiarity with AIAG tools such as APQP, PFMEA/CP, and SPC.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English to interpret specifications, safety rules, operating instructions, reports, and regulatory manuals.
  • Basic math skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in all units of measure using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with co-workers, supervisors, and management.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision and collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Solve practical problems in situations with limited standardization.
  • Interpret instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Meet behavioral expectations established in the company’s performance management process.
  • Organize, prioritize, and manage multiple rapidly changing tasks.
  • Attention to detail and ability to execute tasks accurately.
  • Coach and develop associates in continuous improvement methods.
  • Implement change and apply principles of effective business communication and report writing.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent hand, finger, and wrist movement to handle objects, tools, or controls.
  • Standing (100%) and walking (10%).
  • Frequent talking, listening, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Occasional climbing or balancing.
  • Constant lifting of up to 10 pounds, frequent lifting of up to 20 pounds, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

  • Constantly work under tight time constraints.
  • Occasional mandatory overtime.
  • Exposure to extreme wet/humid conditions, heat/cold temperatures, and loud machinery/equipment.
  • Occasional exposure to vibration, fumes, or airborne particles.
