About the role

In this role, you will help maintain, enhance, troubleshoot, and modernize large-scale applications used in a government environment. The position requires deep Java and SQL experience, strong Linux skills, and the ability to lead technical analysis and coordinate development activities in a collaborative team setting. You will contribute to application development and sustainment, database improvements, system performance, production support, technical documentation, and modernization initiatives. Your work will help support reliable, secure, and efficient public-sector services.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and contribute to the coding, testing, debugging, and deployment of applications based on technical and functional requirements.
  • Prepare test data, develop flowcharts and technical diagrams, create production-run instructions, and support end-user documentation.
  • Lead research and analysis for proposed projects, application modifications, and system enhancements.
  • Evaluate database schemas, write and execute SQL code, deploy packages and triggers, and revise programs to improve operating efficiency.
  • Diagnose application issues by analyzing logs, system messages, thread connectivity, memory utilization, disk input/output, and available disk space.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to application and system performance.
  • Develop programming standards and procedures, create specialized programs, and maintain backup and restoration processes.
  • Prepare technical analyses and verification procedures, coordinate programming projects, and assign or track the work of other team members.
  • Maintain regular attendance and follow approved work hours and client policies.

Requirements

  • 15 years of Java development experience.
  • 10 years of SQL database experience.
  • 8 years of application sustainment and development supporting large applications in a team environment.
  • 5 years of Linux experience.
  • Experience with application development and maintenance, software testing and debugging, SQL development, database objects, production support, system troubleshooting, performance analysis, technical documentation, and software or systems enhancement.

Qualifications

The following qualifications are preferred:

  • 8 years of experience with the Atlassian tool suite, especially JIRA.
  • 8 years of experience working with Agile methodologies.
  • 2 years of experience with State of Texas applications and/or the Texas Department of Public Safety environment.
  • 2 years of experience transitioning applications from legacy mainframe environments to Java and SQL environments.
  • Experience coordinating technical work, mentoring or directing other developers, preparing implementation documentation, and supporting business-continuity processes.

Schedule

  • Standard hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding Texas State holidays when the client is closed.
  • Additional hours: Evening, weekend, and holiday work may occasionally be required. Any work exceeding 40 hours per week must be coordinated and approved in advance by the client.

Work Model

This is an Austin-based position supporting the Texas Department of Public Safety.

  • Primary work location: 5805 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, TX 78752.
  • Work model: The client describes the role as both Hybrid and Telework. The exact in-office schedule is not specified and will be governed by client policy.
