Job Summary (List Format) Java Backend Engineer (San Jose, CA) Role: Java Backend Engineer (Partnership Risk Engineering Team) Location: San Jose, CA (Hybrid 3 days onsite) Eligibility: Paypal or eBay experience required Key Responsibilities Design, develop, and deploy scalable Java-based microservices and RESTful APIs using Spring and Spring Boot Collaborate with Data Scientists, Product Managers, and Architects for end-to-end risk management solutions Implement and optimize CI/CD pipelines (Harness or Jenkins) Deploy and support applications on Google Cloud Platform (GCP); AWS experience is a plus Improve backend performance, scalability, and resilience in distributed cloud environments Integrate with modern data platforms for real-time fraud detection and decision services Utilize AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor) to accelerate development/testing Troubleshoot complex issues and implement root-cause fixes Support modernization of platforms using Docker, Kubernetes, and NoSQL technologies Qualifications Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field 3+ years of professional enterprise software development experience Strong proficiency in Java, J2EE, Spring Framework, and Spring Boot Solid understanding of RESTful API design and relational databases (Oracle, MySQL); familiarity with NoSQL Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines (Harness or Jenkins) Cloud deployment experience (GCP preferred, AWS a plus) Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, and distributed systems architecture Familiarity with AI-powered development tools Professional Attributes Self-motivated, strong ownership, and accountability Excellent analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills Comfortable working in fast-paced, evolving environments Strong communication skills; able to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders Ability to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions Team & Project Context Team: Xoom Risk Engineering (supporting Venmo Project) Purpose: Modernize and enhance PayPal s risk systems using AI/ML, modular platforms, unified data layers Reason for Need: Increased workload and resource backfill Extension/Conversion: Possible based on performance and budget Typical Day In The Role Develop and maintain multiple Java-based microservices for Xoom and PayPal platforms Support and maintain a portfolio of 40+ applications for performance and reliability Lead re-architecture of legacy systems into cloud-native microservices Perform enhancements, bug fixes, and feature development Collaborate with platform/infrastructure teams to align with NGRE standards Participate in code reviews, testing, and deployment for maintainable, high-quality code Interview Process Coding Round (Java/Spring Boot) System Design Interview Hiring Manager Interview
