Full-Time, Non-Exempt position.
About the role
This position is responsible for effectively and safely removing trees on utility right-of-way while operating a Jarraff tree trimmer and other forestry-related equipment.
Responsibilities
- Transports equipment to and from job locations, loading and unloading equipment onto truck/trailer.
- Operates and services equipment such as hydraulic tools, power saws, power winches, mower decks, weed whackers, chippers, and sprayers as instructed.
- Plans, assigns, directs, checks, and coordinates work.
- Uses hand tools, such as axes, hand-lines, saws, block and tackle, pruners, and other equipment as required.
- Sprays brush and stumps, making proper and selective application of herbicides.
- Responsible for quality and quantity of production.
- Performs all aspects of labor as necessary to keep crew operation flowing.
- Cleans up and disposes of all debris.
- Ensures the overall safety, quality, and production requirements of the crew are met.
- Obtains written or oral permission from property owners to trim or remove trees or perform other work on the property.
- Sets up barriers, warning signs, flags, markers, etc. to protect employees and the public.
- Trains new personnel.
- Arranges with the customer or property owner to obtain access, advise of interruption, explain work to be done, etc.
- Promotes and maintains good customer and public relations through the effective accomplishment of assigned work and the appropriate behavior of employees on the crew.
- Safeguards employees and the public from hazards in and around the work area.
- Keeps informed on new equipment, specifications, standard practices, operating procedures, and customer and company employee relations policies and practices.
Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Ability to operate and service all required tools and equipment.
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- A minimum of 6 months of experience operating a Jarraff trimmer.
- A Driver's license is required.
- Must have transportation to and from the show-up location.
- Willing to travel, work, and stay out of state.
Physical Requirements
- RARE (less than 10%): sitting, crawling, climbing poles.
- OCCASIONAL (up to 33%): stooping, squatting, climbing ladders.
- FREQUENT (up to 66%): sense of touch, speaking clearly, climbing on/off a truck, reading, hearing – speech range, depth perception, pushing, pulling, balancing, lifting up to 50 lbs.
- CONTINUOUS (up to 100%): walking, standing, manual dexterity, stooping, range of motion, kneeling, squatting, body twisting, gripping, seeing, reaching, color vision, lifting, carrying, lifting up to 10 lbs.
Safety
- Due to the inherently dangerous nature of the industry and requirements to work with or around hazardous equipment, employees must have sufficient eyesight to judge distance/coordination of equipment and tools.
- Be able to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods.
- Be able to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work assignments.
- Be able to wear personal protective equipment as necessary.
- Be able to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times a day.
- Have the endurance necessary to traverse various terrain.
- Be capable of performing job duties throughout a standard 8- or 10-hour day.
- Be able to communicate with others, read, write, and comprehend written/verbal job instructions and information, and communicate and handle conflict professionally.
- Works around hazardous equipment.
- Works on unlevel ground.
- Works around excessive noise from machines, chainsaws, mowers, woodchippers, and weed whackers with hearing protection.
- Works around falling limbs with protection.
- Works in all temperatures and weather conditions and will be exposed to nature, i.e., irritating plants, biting or stinging insects, dust, etc.
