Janitor

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory with an 80-year legacy of addressing national challenges in energy, environment, and security.

Responsibilities

• Cleaning, sterilizing, and supplying restrooms
• Cleaning and sterilizing offices, laboratories, and public areas
• Removing and disposing of trash including recyclables
• Cleaning building floors and/or performing floor maintenance by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, sealing/waxing, or vacuuming
• Dusting walls, base boards, and equipment
• Cleaning entranceway windows, doors, stairwells, elevators, partitions, and drinking fountains using necessary cleaners, sponges, and/or squeegees
• Following procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures
• Mixing water and detergents in containers to prepare cleaning solutions
• Notifying managers concerning the need for repairs to building operating systems
• Requesting supplies or equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties
• Following requirements described in Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
• Abiding by the principles of the Safe Conduct of Research, including raising safety concerns and considering hazards for every task

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED
• Minimum of two years of commercial/industrial or sanitation janitorial experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy clearance
• Pass a pre-placement drug test and participate in an ongoing random drug testing program (Workplace Substance Abuse Program)
• Successfully complete a pre-hire physical after offer

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience using floor buffers and polishers
• Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, including customer needs assessment and meeting quality standards
• Strong verbal communication skills
