About the Role
Under supervision, you will clean and care for an assigned building or building area, perform watch duties, and/or work as a member of a work projects crew.
Candidates who meet the employment standards will be invited to take the in-person Written Examination tentatively scheduled to begin the week of August 24, 2026. The exam date(s) may change based on the number of applicants and room availability. The list established from this recruitment will be used for all vacancies throughout the County of Santa Clara, including full-time, part-time, and extra-help positions.
Responsibilities
- Cleans, sweeps, and mops floors.
- Dusts and polishes furniture, woodwork, and metalwork.
- Maintains restrooms in a clean and sanitary condition and replenishes supplies.
- Changes light bulbs.
- Empties waste receptacles and ash trays and disposes of trash.
- Moves and arranges furniture and office equipment.
- Operates dehumidifier to disinfect rooms.
- Cleans, disinfects, and polishes water fountains.
- Makes minor repairs to chairs, filing cabinets, and desks.
- Locks office doors and turns out the lights; hangs cubicle curtains.
- Crushes glass receptacles.
- Sets up furniture and prepares rooms for special functions.
- Patrols designated areas, making systematic inspections of buildings.
- Closes and locks buildings; turns off lights.
- Observes and reports conditions that may indicate vandalism, illegal entry, or fire hazards.
- Checks identification of persons entering the building and logs entries during non-office hours.
- Provides general information regarding office hours and locations.
- Prepares simple records such as time of rounds or descriptions of incidents.
- Strips, waxes, and buffs floors; operates and maintains heavy floor care equipment.
- Vacuums carpets and draperies; shampoos carpets.
- Washes walls and inside windows.
- Replaces light bulbs or fluorescent tubes.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Requirements
No training or experience is required. Some assignments may require possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Skills
- Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
- Ability to perform routine janitorial duties.
- Ability to learn approved methods of cleaning and caring for buildings and equipment.
- Ability to learn to operate heavy floor care machines after minimal instruction.
- Ability to read and understand signs, labels, and work schedules written in English.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to get along well with others.
- Ability to lift and move heavy items and work in high places.
- Willingness to work on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and at night.
