The Department of Philosophy at Washington and Lee University invites applications for the inaugural J. Ramsey Martin Professorship in Philosophy. Established through the generosity of the William H. Miller III Foundation, the J. Ramsey Martin Professorship honors the legacy of Joseph Ramsey Martin Jr., who taught philosophy at Washington and Lee from 1968 to 1996 and inspired generations of students through his scholarship, teaching, and mentorship. The position will begin July 1, 2027.

The Philosophy Department offers a vibrant curriculum that encourages rigorous engagement with philosophical traditions while fostering thoughtful inquiry into contemporary questions.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will play a leading role in advancing the department's contributions to the university's core curriculum and broader liberal arts mission. They will be expected to maintain an active program of scholarship, teach undergraduate courses at all levels, contribute to departmental and university service, and engage actively in the intellectual life of the campus.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Philosophy and qualify for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with tenure. They must have as an area of specialization ethics or political philosophy, especially historical approaches as applied to contemporary issues. Area of competence is open.

Pay

The expected salary for this position is between $100,000 - $170,000. Offers are based on factors such as relevant education, experience, rank, tenure status, internal equity, and market and organizational considerations.
