Position Description
The IT Systems Engineer I role is to ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the in-house and cloud information systems that support core organizational functions. This is achieved by designing, building, managing, and supporting the infrastructure services that underpin all internal user services and services to the public. The Systems Engineer will apply proven communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to help identify, communicate, and resolve issues in order to maximize the benefit of IT systems investments.
Position Qualifications
Formal Education & Certification: College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science preferred, and/or 2+ years equivalent work experience.
Certifications: Microsoft Certified Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate, VMware VCA-DCV, or ITIL preferred.
Knowledge & Experience
Infrastructure Automation, Monitoring, Logging, Reporting: Ability to adopt industry best practices and build high-performance infrastructures that are self-healing, scalable & resilient.
Azure Cloud Infrastructure: Working knowledge of Azure cloud infrastructure with hands-on experience using Azure resources and Services.
Platform Sizing, Infrastructure Cost Reduction: Basic knowledge in configuring Dell Server/Storage Hardware.
Forward/Reverse Proxies: Basic knowledge in setting up and deploying Forward/Reverse Proxies.
VMware vSphere: Basic knowledge in VMware vSphere (6.x - 7.x) Hypervisor, including VMware NSX, Storage vSAN, and iSCSI targets.
Microsoft Products: Scripting in Python or a similar general-purpose scripting environment (VBS, PowerShell, and Batch/CMD scripting); Manage Exchange Servers 2016 and 2019 in DAG (Database Availability Group) environment (Client Access, Hub Transport, and Mailbox rules).
Networking Knowledge: Preferred CCNA Level.
Essential Duties
Strategy & Planning: Support and assist the IT Infrastructure Manager in the development of IT strategies in collaboration with the other IT team members, with a specific focus on infrastructure service delivery and life cycle management.
Implement and Maintain Policies & Procedures: Implement and maintain policies and procedures set by the IT leadership.
Deploy, Manage, and Maintain Infrastructure: Deploy, manage, and maintain the enterprise’s infrastructure, Business Continuity, and Disaster Recovery Plan set by the IT Infrastructure manager and IT leadership.
Prepare Documentation: Prepare and ensure the accuracy of documentation, procedures, manuals, and help sheets for all IT infrastructure systems.
Procurement & Deployment Support: Support the development and implementation of the in-house and cloud Infrastructure systems projects and new technology installations.
Research & Recommend Solutions: Research cloud and in-house datacenter infrastructure products, services, and standards in support of IT infrastructure procurement and development efforts. Evaluate and recommend cloud/in-house hosted systems and solutions for purchase.
Write Technical Specifications: Write technical specifications for the purchase of infrastructure systems.
Operational Management: IT infrastructure. Build, configure, administer, and support infrastructure technologies and solutions such as computing, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, COTS, and open-source packages and solutions, and virtual and cloud computing, including IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS. Information security. Know about information security and the security controls that can be used to mitigate security threats within solutions and services. Modern standards approach. Discuss the central principles of modern standards approach, how they apply to the work they are undertaking; apply them under guidance. Ownership and initiative. Own an issue until a new owner has been found or the problem has been mitigated or resolved. Problem solving. Investigate problems in systems, processes, and services, with an understanding of the level of a problem (for example, strategic, tactical, operational). Contribute to the implementation of remedies and preventative measures. Service focus. Take inputs and establish coherent frameworks that work. Systems design. Translate logical designs into physical designs. Produce detailed designs and document all work using required standards, methods, and tools, including prototyping tools where appropriate. Design systems characterized by managed levels of risk, manageable business, and technical complexity, and meaningful impact. Work with well-understood technology and can identify appropriate patterns. Technical understanding. Understand the core technical concepts related to the role and can apply them under guidance. Testing. Correctly test scripts under supervision. Understand the role of testing and how it works. Troubleshooting and problem resolution. Troubleshoot and identify problems across different technology capabilities.
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation Range (Colorado Only): Base Salary: $74,100.00 - $81,900.00 USD annually

This position is eligible for company-paid medical insurance, life insurance, accidental death & dismemberment, long-term disability, 401(K) retirement plan, health savings account (HSA) (HSA not available in Hawaii), and our employee assistance program (EAP). It is also eligible for employee-paid enrollment in vision and dental insurance. Salaried employees (project engineers and above) participate in an annual bonus plan, subject to company and employee performance. Salaried employees (project engineers and above) also receive either a vehicle or vehicle allowance in accordance with Hensel Phelps’ policies. Based on position location, a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) may also be included (subject to periodic review and adjustment).
