About the role

The IT Solution Engineer (Satellite Communications) provides technical leadership in the design, development, and implementation of IT solution deliverables. This role serves as the technical lead and subject matter expert for satellite-based communication solutions supporting critical utility operations, remote facilities, operational technology environments, and enterprise connectivity needs. The position supports multi-orbit satellite communications technologies and hybrid satellite-terrestrial solutions while collaborating with Engineering, Operations, Cybersecurity, Field Personnel, Project Teams, and vendors to deliver resilient, secure, and cost-effective solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Design satellite communication solutions supporting SCADA, telemetry, voice, video, remote monitoring, field operations, and operational connectivity.
  • Define network integration, routing, resiliency, transport, and backhaul requirements between satellite and terrestrial networks.
  • Serve as the technical lead for multi-orbit satellite communications technologies and hybrid satellite-terrestrial solutions.
  • Evaluate emerging satellite technologies, validate business use cases, and support proof-of-concept testing, pilots, and production deployments.
  • Develop and maintain technical standards, engineering specifications, deployment requirements, support procedures, and implementation guides.
  • Ensure solutions comply with PG&E engineering, cybersecurity, safety, operational, and governance requirements.
  • Develop monitoring, reporting, and analytics solutions, including Power BI dashboards for service availability, latency, utilization, outages, asset inventory, cost trends, and operational performance.
  • Analyze satellite network health and performance trends to improve reliability, resiliency, capacity planning, budgeting, and executive reporting.
  • Coordinate implementation activities with Engineering, Project Management, Operations, vendors, and field personnel.
  • Support design reviews, testing, commissioning, operational acceptance, release to operations, troubleshooting, major incident response, service restoration, and lifecycle management.
  • Act as the primary technical interface with satellite providers and support vendor evaluations, Statements of Work, technical proposals, procurement activities, contract reviews, and technology roadmaps.
  • Develop business cases, cost estimates, strategic recommendations, training materials, job aids, and knowledge-transfer content for engineers, field technicians, operations staff, and project teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Telecommunications, Information Systems, Computer Science, or equivalent work experience.
  • 5 years of relevant telecommunications, network engineering, systems engineering, or satellite communications experience.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in telecommunications, satellite communications, networking, or utility communications infrastructure.
  • 3 years of experience designing, supporting, or managing enterprise communication solutions.
  • Experience leading technical projects and collaborating across engineering, operations, cybersecurity, vendors, and business stakeholders.
  • Experience supporting utility, telecommunications, operational technology, or critical infrastructure environments.
  • Experience with multi-orbit satellite communications technologies and hybrid satellite-terrestrial solutions.
  • Knowledge of SCADA, telemetry, emergency communications, resiliency planning, disaster recovery, and business continuity solutions.
  • Experience developing technical standards, deployment governance, technology roadmaps, Power BI dashboards, monitoring tools, and performance analytics.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to create technical diagrams, business cases, standards, job aids, and executive-ready documentation.

Skills

  • Technical knowledge of satellite communications, network transport, routing, resiliency, backhaul, monitoring, and lifecycle management for critical utility communications.
  • Ability to translate business and operational requirements into practical technology solutions that support SCADA, field operations, remote sites, emergency response, and enterprise connectivity needs.
  • Understanding of PG&E IT roles, responsibilities, governance requirements, cybersecurity expectations, and cross-functional delivery processes.
  • Knowledge of PG&E IT project management processes, solution delivery methods, design review practices, release-to-operations expectations, and vendor engagement workflows.
  • Ability to lead cost estimates, business case development, technical evaluations, proof-of-concept testing, implementation planning, and delivery of technology solutions.
  • Strong collaboration and facilitation skills, with the ability to lead technical working sessions across Engineering, Operations, Cybersecurity, Project Management, vendors, and field personnel.
