IT Project Manager 3
This posting is for an IT Project Manager 3 in the Information Technology Project Management (ITPM) Group within the Project Strategy and Execution Division (PSE-ITPM), part of the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Business Management (ALDBUS). The PSE-ITPM group provides IT project and program management support to ensure IT projects achieve success and deliver expected outcomes within scope, schedule, and budget.
About the Role
The project manager manages and ensures the timely completion of multi-discipline IT projects of various levels of complexity and scope. They provide leadership throughout the entire project lifecycle using various project management methodologies and tools to achieve project objectives and outcomes. The role oversees the project team in planning, tracking, and executing projects from initiation to completion, including facilitating the transfer of operations and maintenance activities.
This position plays a pivotal role in driving the development and deployment of innovative AI solutions. You will collaborate closely with customers driving AI initiatives across the Lab and engage cross-functional teams, including engineers, scientists, and business stakeholders, to deliver high-impact AI strategy, pilots, and production implementations. Work is accomplished with significant autonomy, including coordinating activities of other personnel and determining methods and procedures for new assignments.
Responsibilities
- Manage and ensure timely completion of multi-discipline IT projects of varying complexity and scope.
- Provide leadership throughout the project lifecycle using diverse project management methodologies and tools.
- Oversee project teams in planning, tracking, and executing projects from initiation to completion.
- Facilitate the transfer of operations and maintenance activities post-project completion.
- Drive the development and deployment of innovative AI solutions in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- Engage with customers and stakeholders to deliver AI strategy, pilots, and production implementations.
- Produce professional project charters, project management plans (PMPs), and other technical and project documentation.
- Apply Agile and Scrum methodologies to project execution.
Requirements
- Experience supporting, contributing to, or collaborating on technology initiatives involving AI, data analytics, automation, or emerging technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with technical teams developing AI-enabled solutions.
- Strong communication skills to convey technical concepts, risks, requirements, and project impacts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Advanced understanding of IT environments and application development methodologies.
- Proven ability to partner with customers, solve problems, and define expectations and mutual responsibilities.
- Ability to review and understand end-to-end work processes.
- Excellent leadership, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and organizational skills.
- Detailed knowledge of Agile and Scrum methodologies.
- Strong knowledge of software development methodologies, tools, and processes, including source code control, application development tools, database design, programming languages, and component integration.
Qualifications
Requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working in a government or national laboratory environment.
- Experience managing AI initiatives, including LLM, machine learning, predictive analytics, or automation projects.
- Familiarity with AI governance, responsible AI practices, model lifecycle management, and AI-related risk management.
- Working knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, large language models (LLMs), data analytics, and automation technologies, including their application to business, operational, and mission-focused objectives.
- Experience working on various development teams in different contexts (e.g., different team sizes, organizations, cultures, co-located vs. distributed).
- Project Management Professional (PMP) credential.
- Scrum Master Certification (CSM), SAFe, or equivalent.
- Experience working in a hybrid methodology across different teams (Agile and waterfall combined).
Schedule
This position is telework, defined as working from offsite but within a 2-hour ground commute of Los Alamos, NM. Periodic onsite reporting may be required. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change with appropriate notice.
Regular appointment employees must serve a 1-year commitment in their current position to be eligible to apply for other posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.

Additional Details
This position requires a Q clearance, which necessitates U.S. citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Selected applicants will undergo a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government.
