About the role

The Network Architect serves as the strategic leader responsible for designing, planning, and guiding the evolution of Bernalillo County’s enterprise network infrastructure. This role focuses on long-term architecture, scalability, security, and alignment with organizational goals.

Responsibilities

  • Define and maintain the county’s enterprise network architecture roadmap.
  • Lead the design of complex, multi-site, hybrid (cloud/on-premises) network solutions.
  • Ensure scalability, resilience, and security in all network designs.
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to Network Engineers and IT staff.
  • Establish standards, policies, and best practices for network operations.
  • Serve as the escalation point for high-impact network issues.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend adoption strategies.
  • Drive modernization initiatives such as cloud integration.
  • Align network architecture with county-wide digital transformation goals.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including cybersecurity mandates.
  • Partner with Information Security teams to embed security into network design.
  • Document architecture decisions and maintain enterprise-level diagrams and standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Networking, or a related field.
  • Ten (10) years of progressive experience in network engineering, design, or architecture.

Qualifications

  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience may be considered for the above requirements.

Skills

  • Cisco Network Certification (CCNP), Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE), or equivalent.
