About the role

The Principal IT Data Scientist leads the design and delivery of data-driven solutions by leveraging large datasets, advanced analytics and reporting, and machine learning. The role works closely with business stakeholders to understand challenges and objectives, framing analytical approaches that translate complex data into clear, actionable insights that support decision-making.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with internal clients to understand business needs, refine requirements, and translate them into clear analytic deliverables.
  • Work with employees throughout the company to assist them in the design, creation, publishing, update and maintenance of business intelligence reports (e.g. in Power BI or Tableau) or other data analysis tools.
  • Assistance to client may cover data Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL), data model creation, calculations (e.g. Power BI DAX), report creation, and publishing.
  • Design and implement advanced statistical, machine learning, and AI-enabled models that address complex business problems.
  • Communicate technical findings in clear, actionable terms suited to non-technical audiences.
  • Guide data wrangling, feature engineering, and data enrichment efforts to improve model performance.
  • Lead junior data scientists and analysts, promoting best practices in modeling, testing, and deployment.
  • Afford assistance as needed with governance of data, analytics, automation and AI.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree in computer science, data science, information science or related field.
  • 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with Power BI and/or other data visualization software.
  • Strong knowledge of data mining techniques, data modeling, and statistical analysis.
  • Experience using query languages (SQL) and developing and maintaining ETL workflows (e.g. SSIS).
  • Ability to use AWS services to deploy scalable data pipelines and analytics solutions.
  • Proficiency in Python for analytics and model development.
  • Must be detail oriented and have experience working with large data sets.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to communicate highly technical concepts in a clear, succinct, and relevant way to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Results-oriented, data-driven, and self-motivated.
  • Ability to support production environments with occasional off-hours availability if required.

Qualifications

  • Compliance with the Department of Energy's regulation 10 CFR 810 is required.

Skills

  • Experience with AI/ML frameworks and emerging technologies such as generative AI, LLMs, or retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).
  • Experience deploying models into production and monitoring performance (MLOps), including model lifecycle management and performance tracking.
  • Experience developing and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines (e.g., SSIS, AWS Glue, or similar tools).
  • Familiarity with data governance, data quality, and responsible AI practices.
  • Knowledge of IT testing methodologies and/or project management.
  • AWS and/or Power BI certifications.
  • Experience with robotic process automation tools (e.g., Microsoft Power Automate, Automation Anywhere).
  • Prior experience mentoring or supporting junior analytics staff.
