About the role
This IT Co-op student position supports computer users and develops and implements a wide range of computer system solutions within the Information Technology Systems department. The role involves interfacing with internal and external end users to support and maintain end-user computing needs.
Responsibilities
- Assist with help desk tasks, including basic end-user support for hardware, software, printers, mobile devices, and network issues.
- Assist with building and deploying computers, including setting up new computers and preparing previously used computers for reuse.
- Assist with network documentation, including labeling physical network taps and creating drawings and documentation.
- Document issues and fixes.
- Inventory and document IT equipment.
- Lift and transport equipment of various weights.
- Clean workstations of malicious software, such as viruses and spyware.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements
- Attend full-time at Michigan Tech, Ferris State, or Grand Valley State University.
- Junior or senior working toward a BS Degree in a computer-related field.
- A minimum grade point average of 3.0 is required.
- Ability to work overtime as needed.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Operating Systems.
- Working knowledge of desktops, laptops, tablets, and printers.
- Understanding of VLAN concepts and configuration.
- Familiarity with traffic capture techniques and software.
- Understanding of DHCP, ARP, VRRP, Telnet, and SSH protocols.
Skills
- Strong basic keyboarding and editing skills with an understanding of Windows Operating Systems.
- Strong organizational skills to handle numerous details, deadlines, and requests.
- Ability to adapt to and work effectively and independently in a fast-paced, multitasking environment.
- Ability to evaluate and prioritize tasks for efficiency and completeness.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Pay
Starting salary: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour.
