Irrigation Technician II - Public Works

Anticipated hiring range: $24.16 - $33.74 hourly. Full salary range: $24.16 - $35.03 hourly. Offers are based on experience, education, certifications, and other factors.

About the Role

The Irrigation Technician II performs general upkeep and cleaning of public spaces in downtown Greeley and landscape maintenance, including planting, installing pavers, trash receptacles, benches, mowing, watering, pruning, weed control, and facility/equipment repairs. The successful candidate will operate a variety of motorized equipment and hand/power tools and may oversee projects in the absence of higher-level staff.

Responsibilities

• Installs, repairs, troubleshoots, and maintains irrigation systems and associated infrastructure, including controllers, valves, heads, and backflow devices.
• Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on irrigation systems serving parks, medians, landscaped areas, and other City-owned properties.
• Performs landscape maintenance activities including planting, mowing, pruning, watering, weed control, and maintenance of public spaces and amenities.
• Installs and maintains public infrastructure, including pavers, trash receptacles, benches, and signage.
• Operates light and heavy equipment, hand tools, and power tools in support of assigned duties.
• Conducts inspections of irrigation systems, public infrastructure, and equipment and performs minor equipment maintenance.
• Safely applies pesticides, herbicides, and other chemical agents in accordance with applicable regulations and safety standards.
• Maintains records related to irrigation repairs, maintenance activities, and inspections.
• Assists with setup and teardown activities for special events and City-sponsored functions as assigned.
• Performs snow and ice mitigation activities and participates in an on-call rotation as required.
• Provides lead work direction to seasonal staff and may oversee small projects or assignments.
• Follows established safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Three to five (3-5) years of irrigation experience.
• Class A or B Commercial Driver’s license or the ability to obtain within six (6) months.
• Flagger Certification or the ability to obtain within six (6) months.
• Valid driver’s license.

OR any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that enable successful performance of the essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bilingual in English and Spanish.
• Specialized training beyond high school or related experience in equipment maintenance or basic mechanics.
• Previous team leader or supervisory experience.

Skills

• Knowledge and experience in operating hand and power tools, light trucks, tractors, and other equipment used in public space maintenance.
• Knowledge and experience in the upkeep of public spaces, including landscaping and sprinkler systems.
• Basic math skills for installing and maintaining irrigation systems.
• Computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Baseline, Cityworks, and the ability to learn new software.
• Problem-solving skills for situations with diversified procedures and limited standardization.
• Knowledge of Colorado municipal business and organizational structures.
• Collaboration and interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse teams.
• Strong oral, written, and listening communication skills.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily outdoors across municipal environments, including roadways, detention ponds, and construction sites, with occasional indoor tasks at maintenance shops. The role involves exposure to all weather conditions, heavy equipment, loud noise, vibrations, moving machinery, dust, fumes, and potentially hazardous materials. Duties may include working near live traffic, construction zones, active stormwater infrastructure, uneven terrain, confined spaces, and elevated surfaces.

Physical Requirements

• Mobility: Ability to walk, stand, or work on uneven terrain for extended periods; frequently climb ladders, steps, and equipment; enter and exit vehicles regularly.
• Strength: Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull tools, materials, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
• Endurance: Ability to perform sustained physical labor in outdoor environments for 8–12 hours, including during inclement weather and emergency response.
• Dexterity: Sufficient manual dexterity to operate tools, equipment, and vehicle controls with precision; ability to complete fine motor tasks.
• Flexibility: Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach overhead and below waist level, and maintain awkward positions.
• Vision and Hearing: Adequate visual acuity to read instruments, inspect work areas, and monitor traffic; ability to hear warning signals, verbal instructions, and equipment sounds in noisy environments.
• Ability to maintain a DOT Medical Certificate.

Schedule

May involve extended shifts and irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency callouts as part of an on-call rotation.
