About the role
Performs duties to raise, place, and unite girders, columns, and other structural steel members to form completed structures or structural frameworks. Must have a minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in the Industrial Ironworker craft.
Responsibilities
- Reads blueprints and selects required material for construction.
- Sets up hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural steel members.
- Fastens steel members to cable of hoist, using chain, cable, or rope.
- Guides structure being lifted into proper position and aligns rivet holes with corresponding holes.
- Drives drift pins through rivet holes.
- Verifies vertical and horizontal alignment using plumb bob and level.
- Bolts aligned structures to keep them in position until permanently riveted, bolted, or welded into place.
Requirements
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
- For safety reasons, must be able to read and speak fluent English.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Depending on the job site, certain certificates or licenses may be required (NCCER and Advanced Rigging preferred).
- May require travel or commuting for this position.

Physical Demands
- Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
- Frequently required to stand, walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, or hear, and taste or smell.
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and may frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
- Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, and vibration.
- Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
- Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
