Iron Worker Helper

Primary Function

Assist skilled craftsmen by performing supportive duties as directed and work under immediate supervision. Assist in planning, layout, installation, testing, and repair of all types of iron work.

Typical Duties

  • Assemble and secure structural supports according to specifications
  • Use practical knowledge of structural steel assembly and installation
  • Use hand tools to adjust and fasten steel beams
  • Lift and move heavy equipment and materials using proper mechanical equipment
  • Align bolt holes in member with corresponding holes in previously placed member by driving drift pins or handle of wrench through holes
  • Attach loads using chains, slings, cables, hooks and other related equipment
  • Identify safety hazards you or other employees may be subject to and take all necessary corrective action to eliminate or minimize hazards
  • Perform all other job-related duties as requested by supervision

Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum of three (3) years or more in refinery maintenance/turnaround/or construction experience
  • Follow company safety procedures and industry known best work practices
  • General knowledge of basic hand tools
  • Familiarity with craft proficiency testing at or above 70%
  • Completed the Matrix Service C-Stop Plus Safety training, Process Safety Management training and Client / Site specific training
  • Active status within the required drug testing program
  • Pass a pre-employment background check

Physical Requirements

  • Adhere to large amounts of standing, walking, bending, squatting and lifting
  • Talk and hear to communicate
  • Use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, pull objects, materials, controls and tools
  • Lift, carry and move up to 50lbs
  • Work at heights, climb ladders and stairways and work off of platforms
  • Work at heights up to 300' utilizing proper fall protection
  • Use vision abilities to focus, see short and long distances, colors, depth perception and peripheral vision
  • Work outside in the elements including but not limited to the heat, cold, rain, snow and wind
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves and steel-toe boots

Pay Information

The typical hiring range for this position in Washington is $25.00 - $29.00 per hour. The pay rate will depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications and prior experience, specific skill set, geographic location, internal equity, and other factors influencing pay.
