The position of Lead IP Counsel is currently being managed on behalf of a partner company. This role is based in the United States and involves shaping intellectual property strategy within a fast-moving AI environment. Key responsibilities include:
- Serving as a strategic legal partner, guiding intellectual property decisions across a global AI-focused organization.
- Combining deep IP expertise with strong business judgment to support product development, commercial activities, and long-term innovation.
- Advising cross-functional teams on intellectual property risks and opportunities related to AI model development, product outputs, and emerging technologies.
- Developing and executing IP strategies covering copyright, rights of publicity, trademarks, trade secrets, and other critical areas.
- Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex IP-related agreements, including licensing and content-related transactions.
- Supporting teams in structuring partnerships and commercial arrangements while balancing legal protection with business objectives.
- Providing practical guidance on evolving generative AI regulations and intellectual property considerations.
- Collaborating with internal stakeholders and external counsel across multiple jurisdictions to address complex legal matters.
- Helping establish scalable IP processes and frameworks that support continued innovation and global growth.
Requirements
- A highly experienced IP attorney with strong knowledge of emerging technology and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
- Combination of legal expertise with commercial awareness and the ability to provide clear, actionable guidance.
- Juris Doctor (JD) with active membership in at least one U.S. state bar, or a law degree with qualification to practice law in the United Kingdom.
- 6+ years of experience advising on intellectual property matters, including copyright, trade secrets, trademarks, or related areas.
- Proven experience drafting and negotiating complex IP transactions, including licensing agreements.
- Strong understanding of intellectual property challenges specific to generative AI and technology-driven businesses.
- Excellent legal writing, analytical skills, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and make sound decisions in ambiguous situations.
- Strong collaboration skills with technical, product, commercial, and executive stakeholders.
- Business-minded approach with the ability to deliver practical solutions aligned with organizational goals.
- Experience in media, entertainment, music, publishing, software, or content licensing environments is a plus.
- Previous law firm and in-house legal experience is preferred.
