Internship candidates can expect a full-time onsite internship program, running from June 2027 to August 2027. Carefully selected from universities across the country, our interns bring distinctive ideas and perspectives to our organization. After application and initial screening, interns are aligned to a specific team at Northwestern Mutual based on their skillsets and interests, providing exposure to real-world business perspectives through hands-on learning and meaningful work.

In addition to their day-to-day tasks, interns participate in professional development workshops, senior leadership Q&A sessions, volunteer initiatives, networking events, and social activities.

About the Role

Northwestern Mutual’s Private Debt and Equity group is a committed investor in the private markets, partnering with leading private equity firms and corporations for over 30 years. This role evaluates direct private equity and debt investment opportunities across a broad range of industries. The analyst works alongside senior deal team members to assist in all aspects of the transaction, including analyzing, modeling, and monitoring investments.

The role offers diversified exposure to private equity and fixed income investing. Analysts are heavily involved in developing cash flow models, investment theses, and various risk analyses. As analysts progress, they take on more responsibility, coordinating and communicating directly with corporate executives and presenting investment opportunities to senior members of Northwestern Mutual Capital.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in evaluating direct private equity and debt investment opportunities across industries.
  • Work alongside senior deal team members on transaction analysis, modeling, and monitoring.
  • Develop cash flow models, investment theses, and risk analyses.
  • Coordinate and communicate with corporate executives as responsibilities grow.
  • Present investment opportunities to senior leadership.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Mathematics, or a related field from an accredited college or university, with a graduation date between December 2027 and May 2028.
  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
  • Previous work or classroom experience in one or more of the following: Investment Banking, Equity Research, Private Equity, and/or Corporate Development.
  • Employer immigration sponsorship is not available for this role.

Preferred Skills

  • Previous Private Debt & Equity internship and/or relevant project experience.
  • Broad knowledge of investments, understanding of economic forces affecting industries, proficiency in accounting, and strong financial modeling skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving ability.
  • High degree of self-motivation, passion, and a drive to learn.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities.

Pay

Internship salaries are determined based on academic tenure and major. The standard pay structure is as follows:

  • Pay Range - Start: $16.50 per hour
  • Pay Range - End: $30.00 per hour
