Investigator, Regulated Products Enforcement Unit

Job Duties

This individual will investigate suspected violations of consumer protection statutes regulating certain products, including liquid nicotine and nicotine vapor products, products containing kratom, and products containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The investigator will perform field investigations, inspect retail locations, and conduct consumer and witness interviews. As part of the investigative work, this individual will collect and catalog photographic evidence, documents, and regulated products as may be appropriate. Where a pattern or practice of consumer protection violations is suspected or found, the investigator will work with Regulated Products Enforcement Unit attorneys to develop and pursue a possible enforcement action. When warranted and as directed by Unit attorneys, this individual will execute necessary actions for seizure, forfeiture, and destruction of regulated products subject to such actions.

Secondary Responsibilities

Investigate suspected violations of other state and federal consumer protection laws and facilitate the resolution of consumer complaints as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge and experience in consumer protection laws
• Experience conducting interviews and investigations
• Ability to facilitate the resolution of consumer complaints
• Well-developed oral and written communication skills
• Proven ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
• Skills to interact effectively with other state/federal agencies and the general public
• Proficiency using personal computers, including a solid working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and databases
• A driver’s license issued by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles

Additional Considerations

• Possession of a B.A. or B.S. college degree in criminal justice, public administration, political science, government, or a related field
• Or the equivalent combination of experience, training, and education in law enforcement, regulatory enforcement, or investigations
