This engagement begins as a 1099 independent contractor arrangement, with the possibility of extension based on client need. Each engagement is unique. This particular engagement is with one of Promentrs' clients, a large multi-location healthcare services company, and centers on stabilizing and reshaping an inventory accounting function during a period of organizational change. Job Description As the Interim Inventory Accounting Manager, you'll step in to cover a maternity leave within our client's inventory accounting group, expected to begin around September 2026. This is not a maintenance-only assignment: our client's Controller specifically wants fresh, outside perspective on how the function operates today, what should change, and how the team should be structured going forward, all while day-to-day inventory accounting continues to run smoothly. You'll work closely with the Controller to assess the current team, identify what can be delegated or restructured, and help lay the groundwork for a stronger, more scalable function. The client is a large, multi-location organization (1,300+ sites) currently going through a broader accounting reorganization, so you should be comfortable operating with some ambiguity and without a fully settled reporting structure. What You'll Do Inventory Accounting & Close Own day-to-day inventory accounting for the group during the incumbent manager's leave, ensuring no disruption to close, reconciliations, or reportingManage standard/average costing, inventory reconciliation, cycle count analysis, and variance/shrink reviewTie inventory sub-ledgers to the general ledger and support month-end and quarter-end close for the function Operations & Accounting Bridge Act as the connective layer between operations and accounting, translating what's happening on the ops/supply side into accurate, timely inventory accountingPartner with operations stakeholders across a large, multi-location footprint to resolve discrepancies and improve data quality at the source Assessment & Future-State Design Bring a fresh set of eyes to existing inventory processes, identifying inefficiencies and recommending what could be done betterEvaluate what can reasonably be taken off the incumbent manager's plate, supporting both her development and the team's future structurePartner with the Controller to help define the future-state design of the inventory accounting team, including scope that may eventually support a permanent Director-level role Leadership & Coaching Model strong people leadership and delegation, not just technical execution, since developing this muscle within the existing team is a core part of the engagementCommunicate clearly with both accounting and non-accounting stakeholders, including operations leaders unfamiliar with accounting mechanics What You Bring 8–15 years of progressive accounting experience, including meaningful time owning inventory accounting for a multi-location business (retail, distribution, healthcare/veterinary networks, franchise rollups, or similar)Manager-to-Director level experience; comfortable operating at a senior level even in an interim capacityDeep, hands-on knowledge of inventory accounting mechanics: standard/average costing, reconciliation, shrink and variance analysis, and month-end closeDemonstrated experience bridging operations and accounting rather than working in a purely back-office technical capacityStrong people skills and emotional intelligence; proven ability to coach, mentor, and lead, not just analyze dataExperience navigating reorganization, M&A integration, or system conversion, with a track record of staying effective through changeComfortable in a project-based, defined-term engagement, and able to start with limited ramp-up time AI (Artificial Intelligence) Demonstrated proficiency withAI tools is required, including active use of Claude Cowork; candidates should be comfortable leveraging AI to streamline workflows, automate routine tasks, analyze financial data, and enhance productivity across accounting and finance functions. Engagement Terms This position is structured as an independent contractor (1099) arrangement. Compensation is project- or hourly-based and will be discussed during the interview process based on experience, availability, and engagement scope.
