About the role

The International Language Interpreter provides communication services to families who speak languages other than English, primarily focusing on Spanish-speaking families.

Responsibilities

  • Translates communications to and from assigned schools, including fliers, calendars, newsletters, and letters.
  • Sends interpreter requests to the Language Management Specialist at least 5 days in advance for Spanish and 10 days for other languages.
  • Assists families with school enrollment, withdrawals, and transfers (e.g., enrollment days, kindergarten transition, Kamp Kindergarten).
  • Interprets for afterschool and evening activities such as Back to School night, Sneak a Peek night, and Open House.
  • Assists the nurse, attendance, and office staff with phone calls.
  • Interprets for meetings including ELL, IEP, SIT, parent/teacher conferences, Parent Night, Site Council, and special education meetings.
  • Sends Blackboard messages to Spanish-speaking families.
  • Assists Hispanic families with school-based needs through proper channels (counselor, social worker, nurse, principal, or community resources).
  • Assists freelance interpreters during parent-teacher conferences.
  • Updates contact information for Spanish-speaking families, including emergency contacts.
  • Performs other related duties to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

  • Fluency in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to read, write, and translate in both English and Spanish.
  • Strong listening and oral communication skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
  • Some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling.
  • Significant fine finger dexterity.
  • Generally requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing.
  • Performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Hourly range: $19.00

Schedule

  • Full-time, permanent position.
  • 188 days per year.
  • Monday - Friday, 8 hours per day.
