About the role

Provides support to the instructional program by assisting in the instruction or supervision of hearing-impaired students, offering voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice support, and serving as a resource to other school personnel requiring assistance with hearing-impaired individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Attends Individual Education Program meetings with assigned student(s) to provide input into the evaluation of students' progress and/or implement/modify students' objectives by converting conversation to ASL.
  • Provides sign-to-voice interpretation for hearing-impaired student(s) with limited speech to facilitate classroom instruction.
  • Adapts classroom work under the direction of the teacher to support and reinforce lesson plans for assigned students.
  • Assesses classroom, assembly hall, and other room setups (e.g., noise level, visibility) to ensure proper conditions for hearing-impaired students' learning.
  • Attends in-service meetings to obtain information and upgrade skills necessary for the successful education of deaf or hard-of-hearing students.
  • Facilitates, under supervision, first aid and assistance to medically fragile children (e.g., tube feeding, toileting, diapering) to provide required care for assigned students.
  • Interprets subject-specific tests and skill assessments under the guidance of a classroom or resource teacher to evaluate students' language ability and subject proficiency.
  • Monitors student activities (e.g., classroom, lunch, grounds) to ensure the safety and welfare of students.
  • Provides tutoring to hearing-impaired students, under teacher supervision, in accordance with lesson plans (e.g., reading, spelling, self-esteem, behavioral skills, daily living skills) to improve students' academic success.
  • Provides ASL interpretation for group meetings to ensure content understanding for hearing-impaired participants.
  • Tutors students (individually or in small groups) in areas such as reading, spelling, self-esteem, behavioral skills, and daily living skills to implement remediation goals and ensure student success by converting language to ASL.

Requirements

  • Age 16 or older.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
