Job Summary

Provide clear and accurate interpreting/translating services for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in all college-related activities, classes, programs, and events.

Required Qualifications

  • Current Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS), Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) certification, or current national equivalent certification required.

  • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience as an interpreter in a college, university setting, or Deaf Service Agency is desired but not required.

Supplemental Functions

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Maintain confidentiality of student records in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

  • Ensure student and class information is secured on a daily basis.

Physical Demands, Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Sedentary Work - Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

  • Relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards.

  • Office environment. Little physical effort required.

Requirements

Interpreter Trainee Requirements (Salary Grade 205HR)

  • Minimum accumulative GPA of 3.0 in all Interpreting classes

  • Knowledge of Deaf Culture

  • Awareness of Interpreter Professional Code of Conduct

  • Fluency in spoken English

  • Interpersonal skills

  • Customer service skills

  • Computer and applicable software skills

Licenses and Certifications

  • BEI Basic certification or equivalent. Equivalent certifications: BEI Level I, NIC

  • BEI Level II certification or equivalent. Equivalent certifications: CI, CT, IC, IT

  • BEI Advanced certification or equivalent. Equivalent certifications: BEI Level III, NIC Advanced, CSC, IC/TC, CI/CT, RSC, CDI

  • BEI Level IV certification or equivalent. Equivalent certifications: MCSC, SCL

  • BEI Master certification or equivalent. Equivalent certifications: BEI Level V, NIC Master

Compensation

  • Salary Grades 212HR - 216HR

  • Hourly Rates: $32.00 - $46.00
