Internship, Mechanical Engineer, Cell Engineering (Winter/Spring 2027)
About the role
This internship is expected to start around January 2027 and continue through the entire Spring term (through April 2027) or into Summer 2027 if available. A minimum of 12 weeks, full‑time and on‑site is required for most internships. International students whose work authorization is through CPT should consult their school about the ability to work 40 hours per week before applying. Locations: Palo Alto, CA; Fremont, CA; Austin, TX; Robstown, TX; Reno, NV; Toronto, ON. The Internship Recruiting Team seeks to recognize and develop emerging talent through a year‑round program that places students in projects critical to team success, providing hands‑on experience with managers, mentors, and cross‑functional teams. Tesla accelerates the world's transition to sustainable energy by designing, manufacturing, selling and servicing solar technology, energy storage systems, and electric vehicles. Note that many students may be limited to part‑time during the academic year, but this role requires full‑time availability.
Responsibilities
- Design and deploy specialized development equipment for Tesla’s vehicle battery products.
- Work with cross‑functional teams on manufacturing equipment engineering for 4680 form factor battery cells, including developing and testing processes, designing equipment, installing and ramping new production lines, and troubleshooting manufacturing issues.
- Prepare 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, mechanical BOMs, safety documentation, and parts lists for use by other teams.
- Support mechanical builds, proof‑of‑principle assemblies, and production machinery.
- Assist in electrode manufacturing, mixing, can stamping, and supplier industrialization tasks as needed.
- Collaborate with CAE, manufacturing/process, test, and design teams to develop Li‑ion cell components and systems from concept through production launch.
