About the role
International Trade Counsel on the Global Trade Compliance team in Alcon’s Legal & Compliance function.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and support day-to-day activities regarding international trade laws, including sanctions/export controls, with focus on customs compliance.
- Support Alcon’s Head of Global Trade Compliance to ensure compliance with international trade laws affecting Alcon and to design, implement, and manage trade compliance tools and processes.
- Maintain awareness of international trade laws, regulations, administrative rulings, and communicate proposed and enacted changes and their impact on Alcon’s business.
- Manage audits, investigations, inquiries, and other controversies related to trade compliance activities and support the Head of Global Trade Compliance and Vice President, Global Head, Litigation & Government Investigations concerning same.
- Conduct internal reviews of trade compliance processes and operations.
- Deliver training both cross-functionally and internally to Alcon’s Global Trade Compliance function.
- Represent Alcon’s interests in relation to policies and initiatives before the governments and trade industry groups.
- Advisory on contracts, supply chain initiatives, financial arrangements, and other issues with a nexus to trade compliance.
- Assist in the transition process for mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and joint ventures.
- Assist in the negotiation of customs broker and customs service provider contracts.
- Manage engagement of outside legal counsel and consultants on trade compliance-related matters.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school+15 yrs; Assoc.+11 yrs; M.S.+4 yrs; PhD+3 yrs)
- The ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English
- 7 Years of Relevant Experience
- Experience: Must be licensed to practice law in the United States. At least 6 years of experience as an attorney in trade compliance matters (a combination of private practice in a law firm and as in-house counsel at a multinational company is preferred).
- Strong analytical skills and pragmatism
- Experience with FDA-regulated products, preferably medical devices
- Preferred Skills: History of study and/or work experience outside the United States preferred. Experience with trade laws outside the United States a plus. Experience with SAP GTS a plus.
