Internal Only - Fire Equipment Operator

Description

This announcement applies to persons who are receiving pay as regular City employees within the Springfield Fire Department. Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process detailed below.

Written Examination

• Total value: 100 points possible, minimum passing score: 70% of total points possible

• Format: Multiple-choice questions covering manuals and documents such as:

  • Springfield Fire Equipment Operator Study Guide
  • City of Springfield Fire Department Toyne Spartan Metro Star Operating and Inspection Manual
  • ISFTA Pumping and Aerial Apparatus Driver/Operator Handbook
  • Lexipol Policy and Procedures
  • CBAArticle 2: Working Conditions

• Questions are based on:

  • Springfield Fire Equipment Operator Study Guide
  • City of Springfield Fire Department Toyne Spartan Metro Star Operating and Inspection Manual
  • ISFTA Pumping and Aerial Apparatus Driver/Operator Handbook
  • Lexipol Policy and Procedures

Practical Examination

• Total value: 100 points possible, minimum passing score: 50% of total points possible

• Comprises several phases including:

  • Operational Skills phase: Includes engine and aerial evolutions.
  • Feedback sessions: Expected to take place by Friday, November 6th, establishing the eligibility list on or before November 11th.
  • Appeals: Submissions must be in writing no later than 5:00 PM on Friday, October 2nd, 2026.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Experience, Education, and Training:

  • At least three years of continuous service as a firefighter with the Springfield Fire Department as of the announcement closing date and certified to Missouri Division of Fire Safety Driver Operator Core, Pumper and Aerial;
  • OR
  • At least four years of continuous service as a firefighter with the Springfield Fire Department as of the announcement closing date and must obtain Missouri Division of Fire Safety Driver Operator Core, Pumper and Aerial certification within 12 months of appointment.

• Licenses and Certifications:

  • A valid driver's license;
  • Emergency Medical Technician certification throughout the appointment as Fire Equipment Operator;
  • Certification through the Missouri Division of Fire Safety Driver Operator Core, Pumper and Aerial or obtain within 12 months of appointment;
  • Training and course completion of the equivalent of such certifications for those appointed prior to June 2, 2022.

Functions

Operates and maintains heavy firefighting equipment such as engine companies, truck companies, and support apparatus and vehicles.

Other Requirements

• Service rating must be satisfactory per Merit Rule 10.1 (c).

• The eligible list established by the examination shall expire six (6) months from the date established or when exhausted unless extended per Merit Rule 6.4 (a).
