Intern - Transportation

Year-round, part-time internship for undergraduate or graduate students currently enrolled in an engineering or planning program. About the role

Perform a variety of administrative, operational, and technical tasks within the Planning and Engineering Division or Mobility, Innovation & Technology Division in the Transportation Department. Opportunities include coordinating stakeholders for transportation planning meetings, using Geographic Information Systems, project development and engineering reviews, and traffic engineering and operation exercises.

This classification is in the unclassified service and is exempt from the Pima County Merit System Rules.

Responsibilities

• Assist with administrative, operational, and technical tasks as assigned by the department.
• Coordinate stakeholders for transportation planning meetings.
• Utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for planning and analysis.
• Participate in project development and engineering reviews.
• Engage in traffic engineering and operation exercises.

Requirements

• Current enrollment in an accredited college or university at the undergraduate or graduate level in an engineering (e.g., mechanical, civil, electrical) or related science discipline (e.g., hydrology, environmental sciences, architecture, watershed management, transportation, soil & water science, computer science, data analytics).
• Valid driver’s license at the time of application; valid Arizona driver’s license required at time of appointment.
• Subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine suitability to operate county vehicles.
• Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, including verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate-level technology, civil engineering, or planning degree program.
• Previous coursework in systems, engineering, or planning programs.
• Experience with written and verbal communication, as demonstrated through reports, presentations, or class participation.
• Experience with or knowledge of transportation engineering/planning principles and methodologies, demonstrated through coursework or prior work experience.
• Attached transcripts to supplement the application.

Pay

• Hiring range: $17.04 – $20.03 per hour (actual offer considers skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity).
• Full pay range: $17.04 – $23.02 per hour.

Schedule

Part-time, year-round internship.
