Intern - Traffic

About the role

The City of Fort Collins seeks an intern to support traffic operations. This role involves conducting field studies, data collection, and analysis to improve traffic conditions.

Responsibilities

• Completes data collection including intersection turning movement counts, daily traffic volumes, and video data.
• Reviews and compiles collected data for various studies.
• Evaluates intersection sight distance, sight triangles for tree planting, fence installations, signs, and landscaping.
• Participates in traffic-related projects and assists with special projects.
• Maintains electronic traffic counting equipment.
• Places video cameras, traffic count tubes, and completes manual and tube counts.
• Works in live traffic.
• Creates maps in GIS as needed.
• Enters crash data into the database.
• Compiles crash reports.
• Assists with temporary traffic control permits and inspections.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

• Current engineering student at the collegiate level or recent graduate.
• Preferred junior or senior level student in the civil engineering or related field.
• Knowledge of and/or interest in traffic engineering concepts.
• Ability to use software packages such as Word processing, data entry, creating and maintaining Access databases, utilizing GIS mapping using Arc View, creating complex Excel spreadsheets, and crash magic.
• Ability to operate, place, maintain, and repair electronic traffic counting equipment.
• Able to work in the field in placing video cameras, placing traffic count tubes, completing manual and tube counts, etc.
• Ability to work in live traffic.
• Knowledge of the City’s transportation system.
• Excellent customer service and strong communication skills.
• Basic math and statistical analysis skills.
• Willingness to learn about and utilize manuals such as: FHWA Guidelines; MUTCD, City Traffic materials, policies, and guidelines; City Code; Larimer County Urban Area Street Standards; Fort Collins Traffic Code; Work Area Traffic Control Manual; City of Fort Collins Streets Standards; AASHTO Policy on Geometric Design; interpret plans and technical drawings, including intersection and roadway design.

Skills

Knowledge of and/or interest in traffic engineering concepts. Benefits

Variable hourly rate of $16.00 - 20.00 per hour (based on relevant experience).

Hourly rate of $16.00 - 20.00 per hour (based on relevant experience).

Schedule

Work hours are flexible based on school schedule, with typical work hours being 10-15 hours per week during the semester, and full-time during the summer. Maximum of 1560 hours annually.
