About the role

Our Internship and New College Graduate program is designed for students seeking a truly immersive and hands-on experience. At Southland, we view every student as a potential hire and ensure each intern, co-op student, and new college graduate is set up for success to accomplish short and long-term career goals. This program exposes you to exciting projects and potential career paths with one of the country’s largest MEP building systems firms.

Alternate locations include Duluth, VA, Boydton, VA, and Laurel, MD.

Responsibilities

  • Support field labor and provide labor feedback
  • Equipment and subcontractor procurement
  • Document control
  • Design, trade, and subcontractor coordination
  • Assist in budget analysis, cost and margin projections, estimate project changes and impacts
  • Assist in the development of project schedules
  • Read mechanical and plumbing drawings to identify work installed and track labor feedback accurately
  • Prepare an equipment delivery log and track status of orders
  • Communicate effectively with engineers, vendors, and suppliers to procure, manage, and update the submittal process
  • Communicate with field foremen to write and track Requests for Information (RFI) both internally and externally

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in one of the following fields:
    • Mechanical, Architectural, or Electrical Engineering
    • Construction Engineering
    • Civil Engineering
    • Safety Sciences
    • Other areas of interest – Building Automation, Energy Management
  • Interest in technical courses such as fluids, heat transfer, CM scheduling, finance, etc.
  • Strong work ethic and initiative to get the job done
  • Strong communication skills and ability to be resourceful and resilient
  • Able to solve problems with limited support
  • Quick learner who seeks answers independently
  • Positive attitude during adverse or non-ideal situations
  • Exercises accountability in stressful situations (avoids placing blame)
  • Goal-oriented with a collaborative spirit and a "We vs. Me" attitude
  • Strong active listening skills
  • Competent in general business writing and public speaking

Skills

  • Basic knowledge of HVAC design (types of equipment, system operations such as variable air, constant volume, refrigeration cycle) is desired but not required
  • Ability to read mechanical and plumbing drawings
  • Effective communication with engineers, vendors, suppliers, and field foremen

Pay

For Maryland-based internship roles, the pay rate is set at $26.00 per hour.
