Intern - Park Management (Summer)
About the role
This internship provides essential on-the-job experience relating to the management of a state park and recreation area — including signage, audits, budgeting, and capital development. With a park district that contains high use in both camping and day-use, the candidate will acquire well-rounded experience. The intern will be involved with the daily management of Palisades State Park, which sees a large number of visitors and offers a wide variety of recreation. The intern will also be involved with planning and development related to annual park management, and will have the opportunity to develop new skills, lead seasonal employees, and utilize learned coursework related to park management. A desire to provide great customer service and strong people skills will serve the candidate well. The intern will serve as a leader in the absence of the park manager. Sioux Falls is located about 20 miles southwest of the park. On-site housing may be available.
Responsibilities
- Assist with daily management of Palisades State Park operations
- Participate in planning and development for annual park management
- Lead and supervise seasonal employees
- Serve as leader in the absence of the park manager
- Provide customer service to park visitors
- Work on signage, audits, budgeting, and capital development projects
Qualifications
- Must be a current part-time or full-time student (minimum 6 credit hours) in the upcoming semester or immediately preceding semester
- Enrolled at a college, university, or technical institute at time of application
- By internship start, must have completed one year (nine months) of chosen program
- Major in Outdoor Recreation, Conservation Planning and Park Management, or closely related field preferred
- Preference given to junior/senior standing, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions
Schedule
Summer session (May – August). Nights and weekends required.
Pay
$20.82 per hour (minimum).
