Intern - Hatchery (Spring)
About the role
McNenny Hatchery interns will be involved in all aspects of hatchery operations, including fish culture activities such as feeding, fish inventories, and rearing unit cleanings. They will stock fish into public fish waters, and perform building, grounds, and equipment maintenance. The interns will play a key role in numerous hatchery research projects, primarily by collecting data and conducting literature reviews, but also by assisting with data analysis and manuscript preparation. Interns may also be assigned lead responsibilities on a specific research project.
Responsibilities
- Participate in fish culture activities such as feeding, fish inventories, and rearing unit cleanings.
- Stock fish into public fish waters.
- Perform building, grounds, and equipment maintenance.
- Conduct research by collecting data and conducting literature reviews.
- Assist with data analysis and manuscript preparation.
- Assume lead responsibilities on specific research projects.
Qualifications
- Enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time of application.
- Completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program by the start of the internship.
- Preference may be given to juniors/seniors, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
Benefits
Since 2015, students have been first authors on 33 published papers, and co-authors on an additional 15 publications. Current research projects involve aquaculture engineering, fish reproductive biology, fish spawning and rearing techniques, fish surgery methods, and aquaculture occupational safety and health.

$22.82/hr
