About the role

As a Intermediate Systems Design Engineer – Nuclear, you will play a key role in the design and delivery of complex, high reliability engineered systems supporting advanced nuclear and regulated industrial applications. Working as part of a multidisciplinary project team, you will help translate customer and regulatory requirements into robust system designs, gaining hands-on exposure to the full system lifecycle—from early concept development through detailed design, integration, testing, and commissioning.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Supports the Development of System Requirements Definition and Verification
  • Aid in the development, documentation, and maintenance of system level requirements, including functional, technical, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support requirements flow down to subsystems, components, and third party equipment under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Participate in requirements verification planning and execution, including analysis, testing, and inspection activities.
  • Aid in the preparation and execution of acceptance testing activities such as proof of principle testing, factory acceptance testing, and site acceptance testing.
  • Evaluate design outputs (drawings, calculations, specifications, and test results) for conformance to defined requirements.
  • Aid in the preparation of technical documentation such as verification matrices, test plans, and acceptance test reports.
  • Aid in the identification and mitigation of technical risks through structured problem solving and design validation activities.
  • Learn and develop an understanding of customer processes, system functionality, and applicable nuclear and industrial standards.
  • Support system level and component level analysis and calculations, such as functional capability, accuracy, structural considerations, pressure/flow, heat transfer, and reliability, as applicable.
  • Aid in the preparation of technical studies, calculations, and design assessments to support system performance and compliance.
  • Aid in the development of risk assessments, including Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEAs) and Safety Risk Assessments.
  • Aid with proof of principle studies and hands-on testing to validate design assumptions and reduce technical risk.
  • Develop familiarity with applicable codes, standards, quality requirements, and regulatory expectations relevant to nuclear and high reliability systems.
  • Work cross-functionally with other teams, including mechanical, electrical, controls, software, assembly, and project management teams to support system design and execution.
  • Participate in internal and customer design reviews, contribute technical input, and learn best practices for design evaluation.
  • Aid in coordination with third party vendors of process critical equipment, including review of technical specifications and participation in acceptance testing.
  • Aid with system integration, startup, commissioning, and buy-off activities, including on-site support when required.
  • Communicate technical information clearly and effectively within the project team and with customers, with support from senior engineers.

Qualifications

  • Education: Associate’s degree in mechanical engineering, systems design engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, engineering physics, engineering science, or a related engineering discipline is preferred. Academic exposure to systems engineering principles, design methodology, analysis, and verification is preferred. Coursework or project experience related to nuclear, energy, regulated industries, or high reliability systems is considered an asset.
  • Experience: Early career experience (internship, co-op, or entry-level role) supporting mechanical, electrical, controls, or systems engineering activities. Fundamental understanding of engineering design, analysis, and structured problem-solving methodologies. Exposure to requirements definition, technical documentation, or verification and validation activities is an asset. Ability to support basic engineering calculations, analyses, and studies under guidance, such as functional performance, accuracy, structural considerations, or process capability. Familiarity with interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documents. Hands-on interest or experience in testing, prototyping, proof of principle activities, or system integration support is preferred.
  • Nuclear-related knowledge: Interest in developing expertise in nuclear, regulated, or safety-critical systems and environments. Willingness to learn and work within applicable codes, standards, quality programs, and regulatory requirements. Ability and willingness to support work in controlled or regulated environments, including on-site support as required.

Health and Safety Requirements

All employees have the responsibility to work in a healthy and safe manner, report any health, safety or environmental concerns to their manager or supervisor in a timely manner, and participate in the safety culture of the organization. Employee responsibilities for Health, Safety and Environment include: Work in conformance with divisional health, safety and environmental procedures and comply with legislative requirements. Refrain from removing or altering safety devices or guarding unless hazardous energies are controlled through lockout/tagout methods. Report any unsafe conditions or acts, defects in any equipment or protective devices, and any accidents/incidents to the supervisor. Ensure that the required protective equipment is used for assigned tasks. Attend all required health, safety and environmental training. Assist in investigating accidents/incidents where applicable.
