Intermediate Professional, Substation Engineering
WSP is seeking an Intermediate Substation Design Engineer for our Burnsville, MN office. About the Role
Provide support to technical staff, engineers, and project managers for the due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction of utility, industrial, and commercial-scale projects in both public and private sectors. Responsibilities may include:
- Research, design, concept development, and construction of transmission and distribution substations, power distribution, power regulation, renewable energy, and protection and control systems across utilities, transportation, building, and government projects.
- Generate accurate reports and documentation for installations and construction specifications.
- Ensure deliverables meet or exceed industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
Responsibilities
- With minimal supervision, collect, compile, and analyze data related to substation components, equipment specifications for procurement, IFR/IRC design, and compliance with IEEE/NESC Standards and NERC regulations.
- Perform electrical engineering tasks, including design of single-line, three-line, and wiring diagrams, general arrangement, substation layout, bus arrangement, grounding grid design, and lightning protection.
- Provide technical assistance on design requirements, equipment sizing, cabling, AC/DC panel design, and conduit/trenching strategies for safety and functionality.
- Support senior engineers with research and recommendations for design components and field equipment applications.
- Verify site characteristics and assist with engineering, design, testing, maintenance, and construction procedures.
- Develop electrical calculations for loads, equipment sizing, feeder sizing, voltage drop, grounding, lighting circuits, facility services, and power distribution.
- Write technical reports summarizing research, findings, and conclusions, including sketches, calculations, and documentation using software and spreadsheets.
- Assist with risk identification, assessment, and input on design concepts, construction, mitigation, and remediation projects.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including project controls, construction, procurement, document control, and permitting.
- Prepare work plans and coordinate field/site work and permitting.
- Complete assigned training tasks.
- Work with electrical infrastructure authorities on federally, state, regionally, and locally funded projects.
- Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and exercise responsible, ethical decision-making regarding company resources.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 1 to 3 years of relevant post-education experience in an electrical engineering capacity.
- Exposure to operations and project controls for reporting purposes.
- Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, design/build processes, and their application to permitting and project work.
- Familiarity with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including rehabilitation and new design.
- Understanding of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping.

- Flexibility to work extended schedules as required by project needs.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification.
- Prior substation or electric utility design experience.
