Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Policy
    • Share program vision, goals, and results with the community
    • Represent the school at MIAA and conference meetings
    • Implement district policies, delegate authority to staff, and enforce student conduct and disciplinary standards
    • Ensure the athletic program reflects student interests and needs while maintaining high educational standards
  • Stakeholder Engagement
    • Meet regularly with students, staff, and parents to align on policy, behavior, and program implementation
    • Integrate parents into school athletics via newsletters, bulletins, and public announcements
    • Document program progress through monthly and seasonal reports for the Principal and Central Office
  • Business & Operations
    • Direct the operating and capital budgets, manage user fee collection, and oversee game-day financial accounting
    • Cook up all event scheduling, transportation, practice calendars, and official/physician staffing
    • Manage the procurement, inventory, and maintenance of equipment and fields; supervise building security and custodial staff
  • Staff & Administrative Management
    • Lead recruitment, hiring, and seasonal evaluations for all coaching and athletic staff
    • Conduct orientations and training on MIAA rules, Title IX, and safety protocols (bullying/hazing/harassment)
    • Provide leadership training for student-captains and foster professional growth and high morale among staff
    • Maintain accurate, confidential student and coach records in compliance with state and federal laws
  • Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
    • Design and evaluate a continuous, district-wide PreK-12 Physical Education program in collaboration with district leadership
    • Analyze curriculum to recommend grade-specific instructional materials, fitness equipment, and wellness technologies
    • Lead the adoption of national and state physical education standards and wellness frameworks, coordinating all necessary professional development and equipment purchasing
  • Supervision and Evaluation of Teachers
    • Conduct classroom observations for grades 9-12, and provide technical assistance to staff on interpreting physical fitness assessments and performance data
    • Serve as a PK-12 consultant on kinesthetic learning and instructional strategies for both classroom and PE teachers
    • Maintain accurate, confidential student and coach records in compliance with state and federal laws
  • Staff Development
    • Identify PK-12 professional development needs and facilitate professional learning, demonstration lessons, and mentoring
    • Monitor and disseminate current trends in curriculum, methods, and professional materials to the PK-12 faculty
  • Administration
    • Serve on instructional leadership teams and assist in the full hiring cycle—from setting qualifications to recommending candidates—for physical education and coaching staff
    • Prepare and justify comprehensive budget recommendations for PreK-12 physical education equipment, athletics, and wellness facilities
    • Represent program achievements and updates to parent groups, the media, and the School Committee
    • Maintain any necessary licensure for physical education equipment (i.e. Project Challenge equipment, climbing walls, etc.)

    Qualifications

    • Master's Degree in Physical Education, Athletic Administration, or related field (preferred)
    • Massachusetts Certification in Supervisor/Director and Physical Education (PreK-12)
    • 5+ years of successful teaching experience in Physical Education
    • 3+ years of experience in supervision or athletic administration (preferred)
    • Expertise in curriculum development and athletic program management
    • Advanced Skills in leadership, communication, and organizational management
    • Tech Integration: Ability to utilize fitness tracking, wellness apps, and educational technology
    • Culture of Excellence: Capacity to foster a collegial environment with high academic and sportsmanship standards

    Supplemental Information

    Work Year: 261 days. Individual contract. Evaluation: Evaluated annually by the Principal of Andover High School, with input from the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning and/or the Executive Directors of Elementary and Secondary Instruction on matters related to curriculum, instruction, and professional development.
