Interim Controller

Cherry Bekaert Recruiting & Staffing is partnering with a respected higher education institution in Louisville, Kentucky, to identify an experienced Interim Controller for a critical leadership engagement. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on accounting leader who can quickly assess operations, ensure financial stability, and support the institution through a transitional period.

About the role

This is a 3–4 month contract position with an immediate start date, offering a competitive hourly rate of $80–$110. The role is ideal for a strategic accounting leader who can provide financial insight, drive process improvements, and ensure compliance in a fast-paced higher education environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee all day-to-day accounting and finance operations
• Manage the month-end and year-end close processes
• Ensure accuracy of the general ledger, reconciliations, and financial reporting
• Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
• Maintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting procedures
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management activities
• Partner with executive leadership to provide financial insight and strategic guidance
• Coordinate external audits and assist with audit preparation
• Lead, mentor, and support accounting staff
• Identify opportunities for process improvements and operational efficiencies
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, institutional policies, and regulatory requirements

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• Previous Controller or Assistant Controller experience required
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
• Experience leading accounting teams and managing financial operations
• Ability to quickly evaluate processes and implement improvements
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
• Higher education, nonprofit, or public sector experience is highly preferred
• CPA designation is a plus

Pay

$80–$110/hour
