About the role
BrainWorks is partnering with a growing organization seeking a hands-on Interim Controller to step into a high-visibility role during an important period of transition. This individual will take ownership of the day-to-day accounting function, work directly with executive leadership, and help ensure continuity while the organization moves through its next stage of growth. The environment is lean and fast-moving, so we're looking for someone who can balance speed, accuracy, attention to detail, and adaptability.
Responsibilities
- Own the month-end close and core GL accounting across multiple entities.
- Manage reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, intercompany activity, and financial reporting.
- Support payroll, AP, expenses, and other day-to-day accounting activities.
- Prepare and maintain detailed Excel-based calculations, reconciliations, and reporting.
- Support multi-entity and international accounting activity.
- Partner directly with executive leadership and serve as the primary resource for accounting and finance questions.
- Maintain strong controls, documentation, data accuracy, and compliance within a regulated environment.
- Support transition and post-acquisition accounting needs as they arise.
Requirements
- 2+ years of Controller-level experience or comparable hands-on accounting leadership experience.
- Strong GL accounting and month-end close experience.
- Experience owning accounting responsibilities independently within a lean organization.
- Experience with Xero, QuickBooks Online, or similar accounting systems.
- Strong Excel skills and comfort working in a highly spreadsheet-driven environment.
- Experience with payroll/HRIS platforms such as Rippling, Gusto, Justworks, or similar.
- Strong attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy and follow-through.
- Ability to confidently solve problems, and adapt quickly to changing priorities or last-minute requests.
- Comfortable communicating directly with senior leadership and standing behind your numbers.
Nice to Have
- Experience in brokerage, financial services, professional services, commodities, trading, or another regulated environment would be highly valuable, but is not required.
- Experience with multi-entity/international accounting, M&A or post-acquisition environments, commissions/bonus calculations, or consolidation tools is also a plus.
