About the Firm and the Role

Varnum LLP is seeking an Associate Attorney to join its Intellectual Property (IP) Practice Team in one of the firm’s Michigan or Florida offices. Varnum’s IP attorneys handle a wide range of patent, trademark, and other intellectual property matters, including both prosecution and litigation. The team regularly appears before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), as well as in state and federal courts, administrative proceedings, and appellate courts.

Responsibilities

• Assist the IP Practice Team on a variety of intellectual property matters, with a focus on patent prosecution and IP litigation.
• Demonstrate an aptitude for business development and a genuine interest in actively practicing across multiple segments of IP law.

Qualifications

• Registered to practice before the USPTO or possess the educational and technical prerequisites necessary to sit for the USPTO registration examination.
• Maintain active bar membership in at least one U.S. state.
• One to three years of experience practicing intellectual property law with a law firm or in an in‑house role.
• Technical background required; preference for candidates with capabilities in computer science or electrical engineering.
• Excellent academic credentials.
• Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining a high level of responsiveness.
• Exceptional attention to detail.
• Outstanding client service skills.
