About the role
An Insurance Verification Clerk verifies patient insurance coverage to ensure necessary procedures are covered by an individual’s insurance plan. The role involves heavy phone contact with managed care companies, accurate data entry, updating patient benefit information in the practice management system, and providing patients with pertinent information regarding their insurance coverage. The clerk also assists patients with arranging payment plans for services not covered by their insurance and performs light administrative duties as needed.
Responsibilities
- Accurately enter insurance information into the electronic health record and practice management system.
- Verify insurance for all patients.
- Contact patients regarding financial obligations.
- Assist patients with arranging payment plans for services not covered by their insurance company.
- Document activity in patient accounts concisely, precisely, and accurately.
- Maintain clear communication with patients and insurance companies.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of patient and center-related business.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Patient Access Manager.
- Participate in emergency and disaster response programs, including assignment to an emergency response team.
Requirements
- Bilingual in English and Spanish (oral and written).
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Two years of experience in a medical office environment, including work with Medicaid, Managed Care Organizations, commercial, and other third-party payers.
- Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) experience preferred.
- Experience with medical and dental terminology, procedural and diagnostic coding (ICD, CPT, CDT, and HCPCS).
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to deal professionally, courteously, and efficiently with the public and all levels of the organization.
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency in operating a computer, copier, fax, and 10-key machine.
- Proficient in practice management systems and Microsoft Office software applications.
- Basic accounting knowledge.
