Instrumentation Technician II
About the role
The Orange County Sanitation District seeks to fill the role of an Instrumentation Technician II. This position involves performing increasingly complex maintenance, calibration, and repair of process control instrumentation and related equipment; implementing additions or modifications to control systems; troubleshooting and repairing electrical, electronic, microprocessor-based, and pneumatic and mechanical process control components; and performing duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Identifies, isolates, and diagnoses equipment failures using a variety of test equipment.
- Collects, organizes, and analyzes data and information; creates, reviews, and edits P&IDs, instrument loop drawings, electrical schematics and diagrams, and control program logic.
- Installs, modifies, and reprograms process control components such as variable frequency drives, control panels, cables, programmable logic controllers, distributed control systems, and related control system equipment.
- Assists with sourcing and installing parts, equipment, piping, and wiring in accordance with design specifications; calibrates instruments; tests systems; corrects equipment failures; and coordinates work and repairs with other divisions as needed.
Requirements
- High school diploma or G.E.D. supplemented by specialized training or coursework such as relevant trade school in instrumentation technology or a related field.
- Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience maintaining, calibrating, installing, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical process control instruments.
- A valid California Class C Driver’s License.
- Knowledge of the principles, techniques, methods, materials, and tools used in the installation, troubleshooting, preventive and corrective maintenance, calibration, and repair of process control instrumentation.
- Desired: ISA Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) certification or successful completion of an I&C formal apprenticeship and/or accredited training program.
- Effective and efficient troubleshooting and repair skills with extensive experience in I&C systems related to wastewater/chemical processing, electrical power generation with internal combustion engines, generators, and emissions monitoring, PLC/SCADA/DCS, and industrial control networking systems.
- Ability to create, process, and review field data and other technical documentation to produce reports/analyses, proficiently use computer applications, such as MS Outlook, MS Excel, MS Word, and IBM Maximo/CMMS, and communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
- Familiarity with Beamex Field Calibrator and Communicator.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Specialized training or coursework in instrumentation technology or a related field.
- Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in process control instrumentation maintenance, calibration, and repair.
- A valid California Class C Driver’s License.

- Knowledge of process control instrumentation and systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical components.
- Proficiency in creating and reviewing technical documentation.
- Experience with Beamex Field Calibrator and Communicator.

Physical demands: Mobility, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movements; climbing and descending ladders; operating varied hand and power tools and equipment; operating a motor vehicle and visiting various OC San sites, projects, and/or meetings; lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials and objects averaging a weight of 51 pounds or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment and/or assistance from other staff; possible entry into confined spaces and the use of confined entry equipment and protective safety equipment; frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards; finger dexterity to operate and repair tools and equipment.
Environmental elements: Exposure to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, heights, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances and fumes, dust, and air contaminants; interaction with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
